Squirt-gun history
So.....how off-topic can you get on a lazy sunday afternoon? :D While watching a documentarry about the American civil war a quote from general Sherman, assessing the war in 1861, caught my attention; "You might as well attempt to put out the flames of a burning house with a squirt-gun. I think...

Re: British World War I Tanks
Apparently the boom itself was indeed fixed so: "For slight turns, the driver could use the steering tail: an enormous contraption dragged behind the tank consisting of two large wheels, each of which could be blocked by pulling a steel cable causing the whole vehicle to slide in the same direc...

Re: St.G.Abt.914 (ital.)
Thank you Martin, excellent work. as always!
So it was St.Pz.Abt 218 and not 208 after all . I've been wondering about that, finding nothing on a 208 anywhere, so thanks for that too!

Re: St.G.Abt.914 (ital.)
Hello Lupo and Krollspell! I see there are some questionmarks in the information from Sturmvogel. "6 Feb 44 received its (Italian?) StuGs in Verona" "16 Sep 44 10th Army, Italy; still equipped with Italian StuGs (?) " "21 Oct 44 10th Army, Italy; still equipped with Italian ...

Re: St.G.Abt.914 (ital.)
Hi Lupo. Not much of an answer......but as the Abt. was formed on 25 January 1944 in Posen, had German commanders (Major Friedrich Domeyer and Major Dr. Fritz-Lorenz Rabe) and had its Ersatz Abteilung also posted in Posen (Wehrkreis XXI) I would say it is fair to assume that it was an Abt. with both...

Re: III/347 IR & I/200 IR
Indeed. III./347 was ordered to Africa on 7 May 1941 and was attached to the Kdt. rückw. Armeegebiet Tripolis on 16 July 1941. On 30 August 1941 it was transferred to Div. Kdo. zbV Afrika and on 28 November 1941 to 90 leichte Afrika Division. It was renamed to I./leichtes Inf.Rgt. (mot) 200 on 1 Apr...

Re: III/347 IR & I/200 IR
Hi Dave,
According to Tessin's "Wehrmachtbible" III./347 was renamed to I./200 after III./347 was deployed in Africa.
II./200 was formed from III./155 (formerly III./268) and the 9th company from 13./104.
A III./200 was never formed.
best regards,
Paul

Re: tank turret numbering system for 10th companies and higher
Hi jeff, The Grossdeutschland PzKpfw VI used an S (for "schwere", heavy) before the numbers of platoon and vehicle while the division only had one company of Tigers. After a battalion of the beasts was incorporated into the Panzerregiment the companies were denoted by A, B and C instead of...

Re: Comment on "Countryfile" on BBC1 tonight in the UK
Hmmm.....infamous sounds perfectly logical to me in this context.
After all, the program is Countryfile so with all the shelling, trenchdigging, bombcratering, farmdestruction and general mayhem brought to the countryside what else than infamous could it be to them?

LAH KStN in may, june 1944
Hi all, Can anyone tell me which KStN were used (or first implemented) by LAH when it stayed in Belgium for rest and refit in april and may 1944? Simple question but the answer is well beyond anything I have been able to dig up in a variety of books and websites. Anything seems to go, from the 1-11-...

I too hope mankind may someday learn something useful from their history but as long as I see flags like the ones below being waved in Russia the lessons learned so far had better be unlearned

Re: WW2 sites inside Germany
The Wewelsburg, near Paderborn, would be on your route too. Today it is a local museum annex youth hostel and next to nothing reminds any visitor of what it was in the Nazi-era...........apart from the magnificent castle itself of course  . Also more or less on your route is the Dora Mittelwer...

Re: The Bridge (film)
I've seen the 08/15 films quit a few times now and am looking forward to the next I can watch them. Also read the book which I find excellent reading, like much of Kirst's work (though by no means all his work). The original Die Brücke is an excellent film too but I enjoyed the book (by Manfred Greg...
