Try Pen & Sword too. They have published several Russian memoirs as well.

Re: The Last Finnish War

Tom, do not take the title too literally as I believe the Finnish book is not really a diary per se. I'll see whether a local library has the first Finnish edition so I can check what was the original title...

Re: A diary of the Wehrmacht’s Russian officer 1941-1942.

How about Helion? They have now several translations of Russian works in their catalogue and this book's point of view is definitely a rarity. Or perhaps Bair Irintshejev (who lives in Finland) might be interested in translating it into English...

Re: Demyansk

Helmut, since German is a quite phonetic language, how come your son cannot read it? For me a foreign language is always easier to read than speak (apart from Finnish and English, I know some Swedish, German, French (not much) and Spanish (not much)).

Re: "Soldaten" by Neitzel and Welzer

I agree with Gebirgsjäger. I have read the book's Finnish edition and it is very unbalanced. E.g. many of the stories quoted from German pilots remind me of the stories by many U.S. pilots, yet the vast majority of this book's audience are unfamiliar with the latter and thus will get a very false im...

Re: The Last Finnish War

Tom, interestingly, a Finnish publisher is reprinting Erfurth's "Sotapäiväkirja vuodelta 1944" (War Diary from the Year 1944) this year.

Re: Danny Parker's new Peiper book to be released.

Frankly, if an author writes like "A Deadly Past helps us to fathom the world of Hitler’s Third Reich, a morally inverted world in which cruelty was good and kindness belied fatal weakness." I do not have high expectations of objectivity in his research.

Re: Best book(s) on the North African Campaign?

I think the "old" Afrika Korps at War 1 and 2 by George Forty are quite good, especially as they can be bought for a quite decent price. Plus the new Desert war then & now.

Re: Prohorovka/Lawrence

Jake, the process has been indeed long. One reason for it has been Lawrence's job commitments which slowed down the work on the book a lot. As the project began to swell quite a lot, the original publisher apparently was no longer interested in it, and a new one had to be found. Very few were willin...

Re: Finnish General K. L. Oesch's Book

Mike, I can borrow a copy of the Finnish edition from a local library and check some details for you if you wish. Drop me a line via PM if you wish. As for Oesch biographies, I've been told that there is a new one in the making. The currently available one is by Helge Seppälä, a person somewhat pecu...

Re: Prohorovka/Lawrence

Here is some info on the scope of the book. The emphasis is on the the attack in the south by the 52nd Corps, the 48th Panzer Corps, the SS Panzer Corps, the III Panzer Corps and Corps Raus from 4 to 18 July 1943. The author told me that "Anyhow, it does cover the entire southern front, including th...

I noted David Schranck's forthcoming book some time ago by accident. Schranck seems to be a very active reviewer on amazon (.co.uk and .com).

Re: Prohorovka/Lawrence

Ok, here is the latest update! The publication date has moved to 2014 due to infusion of corrections and additions by the author. Current page count estimate is approx. 1200 (format 8" x 10") and the retail price estimate is $150 (a limited print run coupled with professional editing etc.). It may s...
