Thank'ee kindly for all the fascinating info about the Panzer III, friends! But are you sure you mean the 31st Infantry Division, Jhalcli? Couldn't you be referring to the 71st?

Yours,
Paul

I have a query about this division: does anyone know the story behind Oberst Meinrad von Lauchert's sudden elevation to commander of the 2nd just before the Ardennes Offensive began? I've always thought that, perhaps, the previous commander (Generalmajor Henning Schoenfeld) was relieved of command D...

According to Bender and Odegard's book on the Panzertruppe, the remnants of the 106th became part of the newly formed Panzer Division "Clausewitz". This site's listing of the panzer brigades agrees. The 103rd Brigade was apparently folded into the Panzer Division "Muencheburg" in...

When you refer to "up-gunned" PzIIIs, do you gents mean PzIIINs? I've seen a picture in a book of PzIIIs preparing to surrender in Norway in May 1945, and most of them are Ns, with the short 75mm gun.

Thank'ee kindly, Hans. Gosh, that's a shame; no Pumas. I guess everyone likes them because they looked so cool, so sleek and dangerous.

Begging your pardon, Piet, but I would disagree with the notion that Germany never sent crack units to Italy. What of the Hermann Goering Division? And what of the two Tiger battalions and the single Panther battalion? Or the Reichsfuehrer-SS Division? They might not have been crack like the Leibsta...

M, the original M3 with the external cocking handle was approved for service use in December 1942, so it would've been used as early as Sicily or even Tunisia. I don't recall if Cobb (the soldier with the grease gun) was carrying an M3 or an M3A1 (which was cocked by inserting a finger into a hole i...

Let's not forget how much mechanizing an army must cost , Paul. Even a dictatorship, where money seemingly is no object, may have difficulty mechanizing its army; for example, Soviet Russia's army didn't completely give up the horse until 1960. Of course, it helps to have a "motorized" pop...

A long time ago, Nat, a friend of mine sent me some info which unfortunately is not complete, nor does it have references other than a book by someone named Kershaw. Graebner's outfit had about 30 AFVs in all, including some Pumas (SdKfz 234/2 w/50mm gun), both light and medium halftrack APCs (some ...

I suppose an aesthete would consider the MP-44 genuinely ugly, M, but to paraphrase Forrest Gump, "ugly is as ugly does".

Call me prejudiced, but I'd have to go with Russian uniforms as the ugliest. Frankly, I like Waffen-SS camouflage uniforms; they look cool to me.

Hope I can afford a copy of that book one of these days; my great uncle, Vivian Hill, served with the 26th in the Battle of the Bulge.
