Something tells me that the 88mm L/71 round, being bigger and heavier, would mean a slower rate of fire in a tank or tank destroyer so armed. Am I right? Or was the 75mm L/70 round comparable in size to the 88? I'm thinking that a Panther, for instance, could fire two shots for every one fired by a ...

That's what I was thinking too, Jeff--that Schoenfeld's relief was unexpected, and that von Lauchert, no matter how skillful and experienced he undoubtedly was, had virtually no time to really get to know his new command or what was expected of it before they were committed to battle in the Ardennes...

Barkmann's crewmen...

SS-Oberscharfuehrer Ernst Barkmann was one of the most successful tank commanders ever; particularly renowned for his one-vehicle stand at "Barkmann's Corner" in Normandy in July 1944. But it wasn't a one-man stand; he plainly had help from his crew. Without a skillful crew, an Ernst Barkm...

(Panzer Lehr) 25 vehicles (2nd Panzer) 25 vehicles (1st SS Pz.) 16 vehicles (20th Panzer) 16 vehicles (7th Panzer) 6 vehicles The rest of the 100 Sd. Kfz. 234/2 were issued to training units or to the Wa Pruef for testing. Correct me if my math is wrong, but the way I read this, there were more Pum...

I find it all very interesting--especially since I've been thinking of Manfred von Richtofen and how his German title was "Freiherr", and he's always referred to in English as "Baron von Richtofen" or "the Red Baron".

Wearing corrective lenses in the Wehrmacht...

...I can't find this among the older subjects, so I reckon I'd better ask, because I myself wear glasses. How common was the wearing of corrective lenses in the Wehrmacht? What kind of regulations were there, i.e., certain combat arms one couldn't serve in because of wearing glasses? Were there outf...

My personal favorite RK action is Ernst Barkmann's one tank stand with his Panther in Normandy in late July 1944. I suppose it's too well known to repeat here.

Gespenst, I went back to Jentz's book on the Panther and looked it up. All I find is this: "No muzzle-brake was to be fitted, though some of the first 7.5cm KwK44/1 barrels were fitted with muzzle-brakes. The increased recoil force of 18 instead of 12 metric tons was taken into consideration.&q...

Well, that's a tall order, Zurek, but I'll do my best. Tiger Is in the BoB served in the 301st schwere Panzer Abteilung (Funklenk), and Tiger IIs served in the 506th schwere Panzer Abteilung (Heer) and the 501st schwere SS Panzer Abteilung. All were in Dietrich's 6th Panzer Armee. The first two had ...

Well, let's look it up. Feist and Culver's 50th Anniversary Panther book says 100 Panther Gs were built with the steel roadwheels in September 1944; Jentz says only 24 such vehicles have been identified in the official records (Fgst. Nr. 121032 thru 121055), all built by MAN. Feist and Culver say th...

But then, if I may ask, why did the finalized design for the Panther F have no muzzle brake?

Thanks in advance.
