I find "Save Private Ryan" a good movie. And much more realistic than earliers hollywood productions (exept "Iron Cross" from 80's - very good film about battle near Anapa), and very poor Soviet or Polish production ("Lotna" or "Tank crew and dog" this two are...

Re: What Division did II/43.Art.Rgt. Belong to?

2/43 Heavy Artylery Regiment (some sources indicate whole 43 regiment, other only 2/43 abtailung) in 1939 belongs to 7th Army Corps as independent unit, direct under command inf. gen. E. von Schobert. What happened later, i don't know.

division or battle

I choose 8th Jagger Division in east front near Staraja Russa (AG Nord). This is not well known unit, and not famous battle (rather campaign), but it's ordinary german division, with ordinary soldiers without war crimes, and this battlefield was very interesting. (And my relative was there  )

Lebensraum

Yes. Hitlers dream about lebensraum was just a fantasy. But his idea was not one and only. SS-Standartenfuhrer Jurgen Stroop in jail after war told to investigators about two other concepcions of lebensraum, different from Hitler but more real. For example there was conception to create in occupied ...

What if?

Very interesting discusion. My own answer is: France & UK couldn't stay away. Hitlers best dream was Germany from Vogese's to Ukrainian steps. He's lebensraum in east got to bariers: Poland & USSR. Danzig or corridor was just a pretext to create common border with russians. After WWI and Red...

Barbarosa & France.

France 1940 was a big surprise for Stalin and Hitler. The first one and his advisors probably thought that war in western europe didn't finish till summer 1941, or even both sides will fight few years. Hitler believes that he can win quick, but german loses were much smaller than OKW/OKH expected, s...

Japan vs USSR

Japan was completly not interested in war against soviets. Japanese soldier was brave but his equipment was very poor. Emperors Army never had any panzer division, even panzer regiment. 1941 they had only 300 medium tanks and about 2500 light tanks and tankettes. Japanese were defeated by Zhukov in ...

Top 3 "succesfull" battles

1. Festung Breslau (21.01.1945-6.05.1945). In fact that was tragedy for this city but it was most amazing defence during war.
2. Re-taken Charkov in autumn 1943 (after Stalingrad and Kursk it was realy surprise).
3. Crete 1941 , that was surprise too.
