The Battle for Normandy 1944 - extract from forthcoming book
This is just a tiny extract from my forthcoming book "We Buried Our Best on Foreign Soil: The German Defeat in Normandy 1944" to give those of you who are interested an idea of what to expect. The finished book is about 300 pages (100,000 words) and should be out early next year (once I fi...

This is an indispensable source, but with reservations. If you're expecting great insights into battles, you won't find them here really. The conferences have many similarities with the published Table Talk notes. They're less conferences than rambling monologues by Hitler which frequently go off at...

Thanks all Do I have anything new to contribute? Hmm, interesting one. I think the conclusions on the Normandy defeat were drawn a long time ago, and probably will not change. I think Goebbels' diaries are extremely useful - they show far more than before how much Hitler was convinced the Allies wou...

Re: units - all of them, although the focus is on the SS panzer and panzer grenadiers as the documentary and published sources for these seem to be most numerous. The last overall account of the campaign from the German side available in English is Paul Carell's book which is 40 years old and seriou...

German defeat in Normandy 1944
I'm finishing off a 300-page book on the German defeat in Normandy 1944, based on many unpublished or untranslated accounts. Am I wasting my time or is it something people will be interested in? Maybe should have asked that last autumn when I started writing it! It's actually a spin-off of a much la...

"We buried our best on foreign soil"
I believe this is a traditional German soldiers' saying, but I cannot find either the original German text, or a source as to where I might find it. Any help would be much appreciated.

352nd Infanterie Division, D-Day
Does anyone know where the battle HQ of 352nd ID (Dietrich Kraiss) was on June 6th 1944? I'm guessing it was Bayeux...

Need help on a soldier's saying please
Can anyone help me with sourcing a traditional German soldier's saying: It's along the lines of "We buried so many of our best on foreign soil". I'm sure I read it in the intro to a divisional history but cannot find it anymore. If anyone can help out - especially if there's the original G...
