Fusilier Battalions of Volksgrenadier Divisions

It is my understanding that some Volksgrenadier Divisions had a seventh infantry battalion, called a Fusilier Battalion, attached to them under divisional control. Was there any fundamental difference between a Fusilier Battalion and a regular Volksgrenadier Battalion? If so, what was the difference...

560th Volksgrenadier Division-1129 Volksgrenadier Regiment

At the start of the Ardennes Offensive in December 1944, the 560th Volksgrenadier Division was missing one of its regiments, the 1129 Volksgrenadier Regiment. The 1129 VGR had yet to arrive from Denmark. Did the 1129 VGR arrive in time to participate in the Ardennes Offensive? If so, when did it rej...

Cassino

Hi Qvist: I just read Majdalany's CASSINO not long ago. It is a short read which will give you a good idea what the soldiers had to endure on the hillsides of Monte Cassino. I was particularly amused by the author's description of the Forward Observer assigned to his unit, who took to the job of cou...

Thank You Mark!

What a tragedy that he did not finish the project himself. Thank you for answering my question.

Best Books about Wiking Division

Can anyone suggest the best or "must read" books about the 5th SS Wiking Division in English or German? I am a beginner on this topic, so letting me know which books would be the best place to start would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Best Wishes, John W. Howard

Book by Heinz Harmel

In a previous thread on this forum, someone mentioned a book by Heinz Harmel. Did Harmel write a book and has it been published, or is it about to be published? I would be very interested to know. I just read the transcript of the interview Cornelius Ryan did with Harmel. The interview only covered ...

198th Infanterie Division

I was wondering if anyone has some information on this division. I think the 198ID participated in the invasions of Norway and Denmark and then fought on the Ostfront before fighting in Alsace in late 1944 to 1945. Can someone give me a summary of the 198th's exploits? Robert Hurst seems to give nic...
