There are various meanings to the word 'hinein':
hineinbegeben: go inside, or enter somewhere; hineinbitten: (somebody) - to ask or invite in; hineinblicken: to look in; in die Nacht hinein: far into the night. Literal translation would be 'into'.

The numeral between the two words is 1 (one) - what it means, I cannot guess.

Those of you who said "Fähnrich" (with the Umlaut) are corrcet. I believe that the translation would be 'officer candidate'.
A "Fähnrich zur See" is an ensign.
It is possible that now the Umlaute are written: ae, oe, ue, aeu (äu), etc;
