Challenger Tanks

Did the Brit Challenger tank have a gun control problem, i mean sighting the gun, i seem to have read it was the "black box" in the turret. If so did they ever find the problem and correct it or, did they junk it and try a new system.

Re: Auchinleck

I don't think the military wanted to go to Greece, another political decision that the military had to conform to. I think if we look back we'll find others that were losers.

Re: Auchinleck

Hi Sid, didn't Wavall and the Auk have the job of trying to make the transfer from UK to India when India gained independance? As I understand it was one hell of a mess, expecting so much in such a short time line, all the political bickering, it must have taken the patience of a Saint.

Re: US Secty. of defence

Well guys, I think it's the old WW2 hangover. they thought they could win the war all by themselves with thier bombing and were proved wrong, so they pout like little kids. I think it's navy air support from carriers that doing a lot of or most of the air support the ground troops are getting, we mu...

Re: US Secty. of defence

I'm thinking of my experience in WW2 and Korea. On "D" Day our tactical air was first rate but bomber command wanted to fight thier own war and the hell with the landings, but the air force was the Army Air Force then and Ike could call the shots, but they took it bad grace. When they were ...

US Secty. of defence

Gates tells the US Air Force to get off it's ass and get in the war, what do you think? I always thought our AF always wanted to fight thier own little war on the side.

Re: Opinion on Publishers

My biggest disappointment was a hard copy of British Battleships of WW2. The fabric has worn thru at the cornors, the gold lettering has faded to nothing, the binding has broken, what a disaster on such an expensive book, i pride myself on my library and take care of my books, I'm not a collector an...

It's been a long time since i've posted, but here goes. Japanese subs were larger because of the size of the oceans they operated in, there biggest problem as i see it was a very poor submarine command structure. The Japanese went after naval targets instead of our supply routes, think of the damage...

Time to say goodbye

With advancing age the old memory, eye sight and soforth tells me it's time to leave Feldgrau but i will miss the posts. There is a tremendous amount of information that flows through FG every year from every place on the globe, a lot of it can't be found any place else. My Alice and me just celebra...

Paul, a very good article. Some of the problems of the US and British army after WW1 i think of "WAR TO END ALL WARS" attitude and the cutting of the defence budgets really put yhe forces in a tight position. Buying and testing new equipment was out of the question. The German army, when i...

Reb, i agree,it seems every army at some times has a zealot, remember Billy Mitchell, sank a few tied up battleships and all of a sudden we don't need a army or navy, just an air force.I don't think in WW2 our high altitude bombers ever hit a ship under wiegh, i don't think the Brits had any better l...
