Re: Review: Victory Was Beyond Their Grasp

I haven't yet seen the book, but it seems to fill a real vacuum in the military historiography of WWII. There is a need for at least one book on the activities of "unsexy" types of formation common in German ranks. If it comes in at under £25 I will buy it. I would put it on my shelf besid...

Re: A history of Waffen-SS war crimes on the Eastern Front

Hi Terry, Where did you find information on specifically W-SS warcrimes on the Eastern Front? As has been discussed on Feldgrau before, such material seems to be hard to come by either because such war crimes did not much occur, or the Germans covered them up, or because the USSR didn't differentiat...

Re: Rebuttal to Myth of the Eastern Front is forthcoming...

Hi John, I didn't dredge anything up. I was replying to another poster whose previous efforts had gone unanswered for several months. Given that the administration of which you are a part promised such a rebuttal, I rather think you might be better advised to look to yourselves. As for repetition, t...

Re: the bombardment of Dresden

Hi Phylo, The USSR signed a peace treaty with Germany at Brest-Litovsk in 1918 ending a war that Imperial Russia had embarked upon. It also initially claimed jurisdiction over all that had formerly been Imperial Russia's and resisted any attempts at independence by any part of the former Imperial Ru...

Re: Rebuttal to Myth of the Eastern Front is forthcoming...

Hi Andre, I haven't seen any informed rebuttals of this book, largely because very few have read it. The nearest to points of fact established against it seem to be errors with regard to Jason's past connections and Munoz's family background, neither of which undermine the substance of the book. My ...

Re: Hague Conventions 1939-45...

Hi Phylo, The actual title of the booklet is Essential Facts about the League of Nations (Geneva, 1938). It is a really useful little pocket-sized guide to the disputes, mandates, international institutions and legislation, etc., of the inter-war years. The Hague section is on pp.103-109. I have oth...

Re: the bombardment of Dresden

Hi Phylo, The Hague Conventions, under their own terms, had to be "denounced" in a specific manner to the Netherlands Government. The USSR does not appear ever to have done so. As I said earlier, "Both sides on the Eastern Front were technically subject to the Hague Conventions and ne...

P.S. The technical legality of the Nuremberg process has, indeed, been questioned.

Re: Hague Conventions 1939-45...

Hi Phylo, As a result of your question, I went right out and bought a copy of the League of Nations Handbook for 1938 I had seen in a charity shop. It appears that the Hague Court was under the League, but I forgot to bring the book with me today, so I'll have to give details on Monday. I think the ...

Re: Question about 9.Infanterie-Division

Hi Vaterland, German divisions were very conscientious about making sure that men took home leave. As a result, even at Stalingrad, some 10% of the manpower of the annihilated divisions were never encircled and they formed the cadre on which the lost formations were all rebuilt. Within six months ov...

Re: the bombardment of Dresden

Hi Phylo, Both sides on the Eastern Front were technically subject to the Hague Conventions and neither adhered to them. However, as the USSR had not signed up to the Geneva Convention it did not technically have to adhere to it and this released Germany of the legal obligation to do so regarding th...

Re: Weimar Republic

Hi Dr. K, The problem with the Weimar Republic is that the complexion of its governments is not predictable. For example, it is entirely possible that the Communist Party might have come to power by a similar pseudo-constitutional route to the Nazis. Then again the Weimar Republic might have been ru...

Re: Hague Conventions 1939-45...

Hi Phylo, I would put my money on the League of Nations, which was charged with overseeing the administration of the Hague Conventions and other multi-national treaties after WWI. The League of Nations continued to operate in Switzerland throughout WWII. (Its Armaments Year Books for the war years g...

Re: Danish ships seized

Hi Ladislav, I have been looking at this subject recently. All the American republics, not just the USA, took over Danish merchant ships in early 1941 when all were still neutral. In April 1941 many Danish ship owners sent their vessels to neutral ports for safety. Most of these ports were in the Am...

Hi Phylo,

During WWII, however, Spain was economically paralysed and could not even feed itself, let alone undertake major industrialisation.

Cheers,

Sid.
