Schnorkals were not exactly revolutionary. Theyv been around since 1938 and the Germans got their hands on them when they over-ran the Dutch in 1940. They simply didnt develope them until U-boat losses became extreme. Ave Rich, That is what it makes it so foolish, the schnorkals weren't revolutiona...

Avete, I finally saw the movie and found it visually pleasing but poor otherwise. All the hiearchal positions and basic lifestyle of the okiya were for the most part accurate, although accuracy in that field is not difficult to achieve. The dances (Sayuri's solo was a bit much), movements, and littl...

Re: 36 here

Only time will show if they are really interested in the topic or stay at "The Tiger is the best" - "Waffen-SS is cool" etc... teenage naivity, computer wargame knowledge level. \Christoph Avete, Unfortunately, there are doubtlessly some of those types here and I admit that I or...

Avete, I agree with the above reviews but I must admit that "Tigers in the Mud" is only marginal in the literary sense. What Carius has to say is very interesting, but how he says it is rather dry. As a writer Carius leaves a lot to be desired, but it is an good memoir nonetheless and I hi...

Re: WWII Uniforms

I might be prejudiced in saying that the black Panzeruniform we wore as members of the FBB/Großdeutschland was the best one. At least we thought so, especially when considering that we were the only troups in the Panzer units of the Wehrmacht whose black uniform had white piping and the black&s...

Avete,

The Elefant in Italy's mountainous terrain sounds like a recipe for disaster. I was under the impression that Elefant production halted shortly after the Battle of Kursk. Is this true?

Ave Mike, While these are not necessarily exclusively about this subject, but they do include accounts of soviet prison life. These are just a few, I know I am forgetting some. If I remember I will write more later. Davai, Davai!: Memoir of a German Prisoner of World War II in the Soviet Union by A....

The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger

Avete, Has anyone read Sniper on the Eastern Front: The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger ? http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/1844153177.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg If so, what did you think? Even if it is terrible, I will read it for the same reason I read Tigers in the Mud by Otto Carius. Valete, -Spandau

Avete, There is of course the Tomoe Gozen episode of the Gempei war (1181-1185). Tomoe was especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swords-woman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, m...

Ave Tom,

The author of Das Boot, Lothar-Gunther Bucheim, served in the U-boat arm himself and Das Boot deals with Bucheim's experience. Perhaps you just mixed the two up after those decades as they are both great books.

Ave Wittmann, LICE!?  Scheisse!! I wonder if this is true. I'm skeptical, this sounds like one of the "contrary to popular belief" factoids that are so common. The Germans had lice as well, but I have never heard of any soldier dying because of them. Perhaps the lice of Napo...
