Re: Steve Zaloga--Is He a Competant Author?
Well David has raised two seperate issues within this thread. Firstly and intially about Zaloga, and secondly about Osprey. I cant comment with any authority on Zaloga's historical accuracy, as his 'specialism' certainly isn't mine. In regards to Osprey, I agree with David that there publications ar...

War Crimes of XXII Mtn Korp
From NMT judgement The defendant Lanz was appointed to command the XXII Mountain Corps on 25 August 1943 and actually assumed the position on 9 September 1943. The corps command was, generally speaking, the Epirus area of Greece. This consisted of the area between the Gulf of Corinth and Albania lyi...

Re: Battle of Britain
Andy - here's a question... Could the southern Commands LAY mines at night faster than the Germans could clear them by day under air attack??? Do we have a figure for the number of KM minehunters of all types available intheatre...compared to the number of RN and Patrol vessels capable of laying mi...

Re: Battle of Britain
Phylo has already mentioned the DD & CL assets that were available, and I will add in the 600 odd smaller vessels operating in Plymouth, Dover and Nore Commands. In addition to clear the British minefields it was agreed that the Germans required 3 whole days of clear weather without interference...

the responsibilities of the Home Guard, for instance - the British government was giving FAR more 17-18 year olds a military role FAR earlier than the HJ was - AND in 1942 with the NAtional Service Act that military service became universal and compulsory. Exactly what percentage of German 16-18 ye...

Re: War in Georgia
The defence arm of the EU is off little real consequence and as such any meaningful military action could only be undertaken by NATO. Obviously individual states can act on a political/economic level, as can the EU, which is where its combined strength really lays.

The poltical indoctrination was as far as I can remember was a core issue from the beginning along with anti-semitic education lessons Andy - it was very much the same with the religious aspects of various organisation in thg period we are more familiar with. Obviously there are aspects that would ...

Re: War in Georgia
Western nations over the course of the past 19 years have effectively encircled Russia military and economically, and thereby isolated her--or at least likely given her people the further impression that indeed the West cannot be fully trusted Russia has also given the impression that she cannot be...

the HJ WASN'T there to provide recruits for the Army Hi Phylo I never said they were. I stated that they were there to provide bodies intially (recruits for the military aspect of a political party) for the SA at the HJ's inception. The poltical indoctrination was as far as I can remember was a cor...

Hi Yuri My post wasn't so much about why Russia would invade any of the Baltic States but more to do with what the 'West' would do if they did. The West won't go to war over South Ossetia but would the average person in UK, Ger, Fra or the US go to war over the Baltics? Regards Guys I offer stop to...

Hi Phylo
I'm aware that there are similar traits but the differences far outweigh them, especially that the HJ was there to provide recruits for the military aspect of a political party. Also if they were so similar one wonders why the Scouting movement was banned in Germany!

Re: War in Georgia
No sane person wants a war, let alone a nuclear tipped one but where do we draw the line in the sand when it comes to Russia coming to the aid of 'Russians' in now indep countries? I dont advocate sending British troops to die in South Ossietia but I wonder if the Russians decide to aid 'Russians' w...
