Annelie, can you tell me on which page and/or in which chapter you found that text?

I have no problem with the emotions - it is many of the faulty facts that gets me.

Re: Fall of Konigsberg

As the publishers are at odds with their (former) writers, translators, authors and editors (this is in court now, AFAIK), it is highly doubtful that the book will be released in English. The book itself is a hodge-podge and a disappointment.

Re: The Korsun Pocket by Zetterling

The book was published in Sweden in 2006, but the research and writing process being what it is - especially with a book like this - "Hell's Gate" was probably not known when the process was initiated. Also, the book was originally written in English, as the authors aimed for the English-s...

Re: The Korsun Pocket by Zetterling

I have to admit though that I had to scratch my head when he states in the preface that "Relatively little is written on the battle of Korsun [Cherkassy]. In English it is mentioned (my italics) in several books, but rarely are more than a few pages devoted to it." That puzzling comment i...

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

I suppose that the original map - which differs from the maps found in both the English and Swedish editions - is one that was approved by Sajer, perhaps even made by him (or after a sketch). It is interesting that Konotop is left out, and that the crossing of the Dnieper after the battles of Kursk ...

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

Fog of war is one thing while in the thick of it, but I for one can live with Sajer's strategic briefings if they help the reader get the bigger picture. I've mentioned Gottlob Biedermann's "In Deadly Combat" before, which is a memoir where the author goes to great pains to place his exper...

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

On p. 230, Sajer writes "The radio announced that our Belgorod offensive had been crowned with success, and marked the beginning of our further progress eastward." Unless referring to a general offensive to the east at a later date, the main thrust was to the north during the Battle of Kur...

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

GD was positioned some 28 km NW of Belgorod (which was in German hands, and not fought over until GD had left the area), while Kursk was some 120 km to the north. Sajer mentions that an NCO gave them a rough idea of their position "some three miles northwest of Belgorod" (p. 217). Now, the...

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

If Sajer was publishing NOW - well, we ALL know the degree of investigation it would draw once it's veracity was questioned  The problem is - because the book has been around so long the controversy and debate itself has a history all of its own - sometimes obscuring the issue... (...) And TH...

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

Was his leave in 1944 rather than 1943. Hopefully, Guy Sajer can be asked these questions if the movie is made. According to his book, until the end of March 1944, Sajer was cooling his heels some 50 miles south of Lvov in a camp near a village called "Sueka" by the Dniestr. There's actua...

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

What he didn't know or care about was how that info fit together. Sajer has info in his book that a private should not have known. He is inconsistent with the level of detail - that shows supplementation but not mastery of the subject. He sure is inconsistent; pages of dialogue, details like the cr...
