Re: The world has gone nuts....
Hey Commissar I've noticed this sort of thing happening with out-of-print music titles, sellers tend to try it on with prices like these, but what tends to happen, say if someone sticks one on ebay as an auction rather than a buy-it-now, is that they'll go for a lower price than these guys try for. ...

Re: The Wehrmacht and Russia
In terms of mistrust on the motives of countries to the west of them, perhaps not... has that weird Stalin nostalgia thing eased back any in the last year or so?

Re: Humor in the Wehrmacht
You may argue that this fails to qualify as humour at all, just crass vulgarity... but the section in Bruno Friesen's 'Panzer Gunner' on the ritual of the Wehrmacht tank driving fraternity did make me laugh out loud. This consisted of stuffing one's face with the 'gassier' foodstuffs from the cantee...

Re: The Bridge (film)
I tend to think if it isn't broke, don't fix it... there's nothing intrinsically wrong with a remake if it's inventive, for instance the cross-pollination between western movies and samurai epics was a wonderful thing. But it's now something the industry relies on... Planet Of The Apes, Wicker Man, ...

Ronald Searle exhibition
Was quite impressed by the Cartoon museum's expo of Searle's work - interesting to see his time as a POW in Japanese camps shaping his subsequent work, eg some of the St Trinian's illustrations obliquely referring to the brutalities he witnessed or underwent there. Also some interesting takes on pos...

Sturmpanzer Brumbar
Does anyone know in what circumstances these were ever used? I have the idea a street-fighting demolition of strongpoints thing may have been the point behind them? Can't see them being much use in an anti-tank capacity?

Re: Humor in the Wehrmacht
This is off at a slight tangent, but I was just reminded of something that sounds like it SHOULD be a joke, but, worryingly, isn't: during the recruiting process for Kamikaze volunteers, Japanese pilots were supposedly given a form with multiple choice answers. How keen are you to perform a kamikaze...

Rollo in Stalingrad is pretty good: 'Do you intend to accept the fuhrer's congratulations with your top button undone??' 'Yes...'

Re: English sounding names of German military personnel of WW2
Imagine the fun they'd have had booking him in at the end of hostilities (assuming he got that far and assuming it was English speakers processing him)! 'Tell us your... pfffffffft... name again soldier...' (and to think of the mileage we got out of the pronunciation of 'vater' at school...)

Re: BBC series Secret Army
Oh dear... drunken ranting... sorry! On a more sober note, another reason to pay the license fee is that Andrew Marr history of Britain show. 'Charles', (does one have to be called Charles to be a butler?), 'Sir Oswald is leaving...' 'But I haven't finished my brandy!!!'

Re: BBC series Secret Army
Woooahhh... less of that Top Gear talk. James May I can deal with, he did that televised ride in a U2 spyplane (which beats any association with the rock band in my book), I don't mind him. Hammond needs to stay away from the styling products and personal shoppers half his age, as for Clarkson... Vi...

Re: BBC series Secret Army
Ah yes, much as I try not to wallow in 'it were better when I were lad' sentiments, I have to admit contemporary Brit TV drama output is c*ck. There's a real cultural impasse going on here, and I'm not sure what it's going to take to shift it. I tend to think if you settle for a load of stupid b***c...
