Re: Maps for Seelöwe
OK! In Halder's diary it is stated in September (or August): Luftwaffe (feldzugmeister) reports 1.000 transports available. 750 operational. Fred, the Luftwaffe Transportgruppen never EVER mustered 1,000 Ju52s; it COULD theoretically muster that number of "transport" aircraft....but that ...

Re: Maps for Seelöwe
However, his transcript from Halder's visit in September is rather selective both on the conditions in the ports as well as loading equipment and the available number of Ju52's. If I remember correctly the port commanders did not see the sunken ships as a problem. Nor IIRC did Halder...what he saw ...

Re: Maps for Seelöwe
Yes, they were all "drive off" ramps....but there were at least three different ways they were deployed  I don't see what high and dry has got to do with it....wouldn't that be the ideal - as the opposite of drifting around... 1/ you have to either BE run aground....or wait until you...

Re: Maps for Seelöwe
Not many - 3.200! Honestly, lwd - you are discussing Seelöwe without knowing this....? IIRC only a fraction were modified - COULD be modified....to lower the ramps themselves . A greater number required a large "A-frame" to be assembled by the men on board, then the ramp lowered....I.E. t...

Re: Dresden TV drama
Appears to have been a fairly recent made-for-TV drama showing the leadup to the 1945 raid from both sides. Anyone else catch it, would be interested to hear reactions? Niot that recent, it dates from 2006, I remember it the first time it was shown. Suprisingly its a GERMAN tv production, and is qu...

Re: Partisans, Guerillas, and Resistance
I was trying to think WWII when I wrote my comments. You're right, of course, but what is viewed as terrorism today isn't quite the same as 70 years ago, IMHO. Well, think of it THIS way - in WWII the particular use of reference terms was partly propaganda! The Germans weren't going to admit...

Re: Partisans, Guerillas, and Resistance
Well...technically there IS a difference between a Terorist and an Insurgent... A Terrorist hopes to bring his enemy to the negotiating table for whatever end by the expedient of making ALL the security arrangements required to maintain "normal" live in a particular nation too expensive to...

Re: Partisans, Guerillas, and Resistance
Well, technically speaking - in English, a "partisan" is someone who supports one argument, creed or political belief. You can be "A" partisan, or "partisan" in your beliefs....and hence someone holding two opinions on a given topic or seeing and accepting both sides in...

Looking here... http://www.vanderweel.info/atlantikwall/eov_grossraumgefechtsstand_diogenes.htm On september 17, 1944, the day of operation "Market-Garden" -the allied air landings at Arnhem-, the Germans destroyed the interior of "Diogenes" by using explosives, and buried the co...

Re: Fliegerhorst Deelen
Haen, is this the establishment you're talking about? http://www.fliegerhorstdeelen.nl/?page_id=44&lang=en There's an interesting throwaway line in there... The proof of the German air defence system being effective came after the war: the Dutch Air Defence system, now needed to defend against R...
