Re: Breslau 1945

Didn't the helicopter story originate from Speer's book?

Re: Feldgrau Author: Stephan Hamilton

Yes, that is quite possible. Hamilton lists With Our Backs to Berlin as the source of the account (a number of extracts are scattered throughout the Assault on Berlin chapter), but I suppose that Tissier might have hooked him up with the original, untranslated version.

Re: Books that need translating

Judging from this post , Michaelis' book is vastly inferior to Klausch's, so it's probably not worth bothering with. Too bad Klausch's book is long out of print on top of not being available in English. :D The Siegrunen article sounds interesting, but I can't think of any way to get ahold of it, sad...

Re: Feldgrau Author: Stephan Hamilton

A question about a minor detail: On page 211 of Bloody Streets you talk about Harry Schweizer's experiences as a tank hunter. The section starts like this: The approach of Soviet tanks so close to the Zoo Bunker caused the call for volunteers to head out into the local streets and hunt down Russian ...

Re: Books that need translating

Antifaschisten in SS-Uniform: Schicksal und Widerstand der deutschen politischen KZ-Haftlinge, Zuchthaus- und Wehrmachtstrafgefangenen in der SS-Sonderformation Dirlewanger by Hans-Peter Klausch is another book that needs to be translated to English. There doesn't seem to be a single decent book on ...

Re: Out-of-print book updates

JJF seems to be planning to get the two first (possibly the third as well?) volumes of Rudolf Lehmann's Leibstandarte series back into print. Emailed him about it and he said that they'd probably get around to it in a year or so, when the economic situation improves.

Re: New Stalingrad Book: Angriff by Jason Mark

In that case I must say that your standards are pretty low. Just take a look at Eagle-Editions´ or R. J. Bender´s books to see what is true high physical quality: heavy, glossy paper, thick and sturdy covers, strong binding. Based on your comments you must be a friend of Soviet books: poorish paper...

Re: Incidents and actions from the Eastern Front - 1941.

Another testimony was given by Gefreite Karl Jäger as follows: “After being captured together with others comrades on Jul 01 1941, they obliged us and we should take off ours boots, socks and trousers. Also we should empty our pockets and all values were taken by the soviets. Those who were not fas...

Can't find anything to criticize about the physical qualities of the book, found the paper quality to be pretty nice. The content is more important in any case.

Re: The 'Kindly Ones'

Read it in Norwegian translation last year, pretty decent novel. It's about an SD officer and his wartime experiences on the eastern front and later as a part of the concentration camp system.

Re: Feldgrau Author: Charles Trang

Thanks for your positive comments Nicolai. Yes, it is a shame the whole text could not be translated : in fact, the english text is about one quarter of the original one ! Many informations are thus lost for the american and english readers. Heimdal could not allow to increase the page number becau...

Re: C Trangs' Leibstandarte series

The third volume is the Kriegsberichter Franz Roth album, IIRC. It has received some pretty bad reviews due to the poor quality of the images (they were reproduced from contact sheets since the negatives were destroyed at the end of the war).

Re: Feldgrau Author: Charles Trang

I just finished reading your Totenkopf book, top notch stuff! 'tis sad that your publisher chose to excise a lot of the text bits to make room for the Thule album instead of just inflating the page count, though. (What was up with the big "Totenkopf" on the spine being upside-down, by the ...

There's a book about the division called The Cruel Hunters: SS-Sonderkommando Dirlewanger Hitler's Most Notorious Anti-Partisan Unit, maybe it answers your question? If someone on here owns a copy they might be able to help you.

Nicolai-was it the 50-100 soldiers you thought exagerated?I don't understand-or was it infered they all had MGs?Or fitted with drum mags? Actually they are not mags as such, but more of a belt holder. It was mostly the thought of a hundred soldiers at the front of a massive breakout all equipped wit...
