Re: Prinz Eugen supports Panzervervand Strachwitz II at Tukkum
I am researching the battle of Tukkum (now Tukums) Lativa on August 20, 1944. I am trying to learn more about the role of the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen in supporting the attack of Panzerverband Strachwitz II there I have very little information of the Panzerverband Strachwitz. Was this the same att...

Re: Panther maintenance
I have always thought that the Ausf G was quite reliable. All German tanks needed regural (every day?) maintenance, but didn't they all!

Re: Panther maintenance
The panther was one, if not the most, modern armoured vehicule of the II world war, nonetheless, it had a number of flaws, particularly the Ausf A that was sent to combat way to soon, and suffered from a huge quantity of engine and transmission problems. It´s true that the panther suffered a high n...

Re:
Thanks to both of you for your information and suggestions. It would be interesting to find out just how the decision was made to commit the Prinz Eugen group to this dangerous mission in the fairly narrow waters off Latvia, with Russian subs and aircraft possibly in the area. In August 1944 there ...

Re: 1st SS unit in combat vs USA, Normandy?
Recon units of the 2nd SS Panzer Div engaged 101St Airborne Div June 7, 1944. What is Your source? According to Anthony Beevor, it took 17 days for 2. SS PD. to get to the front. First units of the 17. SS-Pz.Gren.Div. started moving from their bases Southwards of the river Loire on the 7th June and...

Re: tank turret numbering system for 10th companies and higher
Hello!
In the four-digit Companies the 13-digit was taller than the Platoon-Tank digits. E.a. 1341 was Wittmann's tank in LAH. (in Italy 1943).

The German Sixth Army on the Way to Catastrophe. Translated and digested by the MILITARY REVIEW from a copyrighted article by Herbert SELLE in “Allgemeine Schweitzerische Militarzeitsehrift” (Switzerland) August 1956. I found this article not until today. Great! Tigre, woud it be possible to s...

Long time, no see! I have an interesting book by Konstantin Simonov about Stalin and the war. Interviews of Admiral of the Fleet I.S. Isakov and Marshal of the Soviet Union A.M. Vasilevski of events before and during "the Great Patriotic War". :[] I could translate some of it, but I...

Re: Germans in Finland 1918
Thanks, Tapani! Wolf H. Halsti was a 13-years old volentary translater (and home-run-away) of then Hauptmann von Falkenhorst (later GFM of AOK Norwegen). Halsti's mother was German, so he spoke German as his mother language, his father spoke Swedish, and young Hagman (Wolfgang Halsti) spoke fluent F...

Yes, Syrjäntaka it was.
Well, an old man dragging something from memory, not checking... That's the result.
But was my overall assumption right?

Re: Germans in Finland 1918
I think that most of the losses came in the battle of Salmentaka(?). The Reds had no other choice than a desperate breakthroug.
The Germans were surprised and overrun, which explains great losses for both sides.
Invading Helsinki also was not easy for the Germans.

P.S. I still think that Vatutin was no match against von Manstein.
