Gotterdammerung 1945

Hello all, I just read Gotterdammerung 1945. What a great book! It's truly a pity that the world lost such an intriguing, thoughtful, and insightful author. Mr. Schneider is clearly no nazi, he's not pro-German or anti-Russian. His interest was the human condition and he chronicled it wonderfully. C...

Definitely a keeper. I rate it quite highly. A lot of participants and eyewitnesses to the actual events, give it the you are there feel.

Cheers, Jeff.

jmann, "Madness" and "Demyansk" went up on eBay a couple of months ago, I put in a max bid for both at $12.00 or $13.00. They sold for $15.00, I am still kicking myself for being too cheap and not maxing at 20 or 30. I am looking, but I can't find 'em. If I do, I and there are mo...

Has any one read "Siege" or "Madness without end" or "Demyansk"? I thought "Seige" was quite good.

Tip for Sid

I was reading this old thread, and as a huge "Simpsons" fan, I have to tactfully correct you. Bart didn't coin "cheese eating surrender monkeys", it was uttered by Groundskeeper Willie, an ornery, utterly hilarious Scotsman. I know, I know, Willie isn't a real Scotsman, just an A...

There is a monument to Lidice in Crest Hill, Il. Something was renamed Lidice, but I can't remember if it was a town or township. The Joliet herald News probably has a story in it's archives on it.

Anti Jewish feelings have a long rich tradition in Europe. Augustine's writings helped make it a pillar of the Catholic church, Luther was anti Jewish as well. So Germany almost coudn't help but be ripe ground for what happened. A new poll showed that as of last month, about 1/3 of Germans have nega...

Reb, I have read a bit about the Pershings in Korea, and they did quite well there. They were mostly used as mobile artillery and fire support, after 1951. I seem to remember the few times they encountered T-34's they dominated. That could also be caused by the NKPA lack of training, but it was just...

Reb, you put into words what I didn't. As far as best individual tank, I saw a site that said 200 Pershings made it into the ETO and 20 saw combat. If I could find any Pershing after action reports or experiences, I would love it. The Pershing seems to have been a good one. Maybe better than the Pan...

I have read somewhere, I can't remember the source, that S.S. company grade officers had a very high casualty rate. If true, this could mean that the junior officers set good examples by leading from the front. It could also mean lower combat effectiveness as the troops would now be led by more unse...

best tank

Who is Belton Cooper? When I find the sources, I will post them. As far as the T-34 being better than the Sherman, that's my opinion. You are right on the point about "energy and might" I meant tank production and didn't get that across cleanly. I didn't think that would get nitpicked beca...

Best tank

My vote for best tank is the Panther, with the T-34 a close 2nd. I also think the T-34 was the most significant. The Germans weren't ready for it, their III's and IV's, and "doorknockers" couldn't stop them. There were many ordinary landser who became tankbusters with bundled grenades or h...

# of PWs that survived Russian captivity.

Does anyone have any info or numbers of German PWs captured by the Russians who survived captivity? I would guess that the actual number is small. I would also guess that not many enlisted men or draftees survived, besides turncoats.
