Less than 30 men does not a division make, Sven.

Thanks for the additional info, Sid. I might add something I forgot to mention--there was a "26th SS Panzer Division" briefly existing on paper during the late summer/early fall of 1944, but eventually, that "division" just disappeared, and the number "26" was taken ove...

Additional info--the following Japanese night fighters had oblique-mounted cannon: Kawasaki Ki-45 "Nick" (twin 20mm cannon); Mitsubishi Ki-46 "Dinah" (converted recon plane with a single 37mm cannon); Nakajima C6N "Myrt" (converted recon plane with twin 20mm cannon); Na...

Admittedly, my reference is more than 20 years old, but Martin Windrow, in Osprey Men-at-Arms #24 The Panzer Divisions says the 24th was formed from the 1st Cavalry Division on November 28, 1941, at Stablack, East Prussia, and that it trained in France from April thru June 1942, then went to Russia ...

One could actually say there were 41 nominal Waffen-SS "divisions", at least designated thusly, if not actually at divisional strength. The divisional numbers 23, 29, and 33 were utilized twice: 23rd Waffen-Gebirgs Division der SS "Kama", the second Bosnian Muslim division, was d...

Actually, Don, the Japanese had night fighters; they just lacked effective radar. They either used searchlights (some even mounted in their aircraft) or good old low-tech Eyeball Mark One to fight by night, if they didn't have radar installed or if the radar was in bad repair.

No, Michael, the mistake was mine. I should've said "6" and not "5". Sorry.

That would be nice, too, Christoph, but for the time being, that webpage--and its associated site--will do.

One objection, though I agree it was an interesting read--according to every book I've read on the Waffen-SS, it was SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment 5 which was granted the honor title "Theodor Eicke", not SS-Panzer Regiment 3. So is this information posted by Michael correct or not on this po...

Christoph, the web-page Leo gave us was exactly what I was looking for. What I was referring to was the report book or pouch which a company sergeant major (Spiess) normally carried tucked into his tunic front--something like the figure illustrated in plate B1 of Osprey Men-at-Arms #24, The Panzer D...

Y'know, I think Bart has a good question here. I've never seen a close-up of a German company sergeant-major's report book, either.

Instead of trying to answer an unanswerable question, how about this one:

What's your favorite German division of WWII?

You can look at my avatar to see what my answer is ...

That was where I learned how to say "SOB" in Russian, Ferret.
