"Kelly's Heroes"

Fun war movie, but after seeing it so many times on the Military Channel, and other cable TV channels, it begins to feel like...torture. Even worse torture is the Clint Eastwood movie "Heartbreak Ridge," possibly the worse military-theme I've ever seen and the worst about the U.S. Marine C...

Why don't we ever hear the word "Heer" in documentaries?...

It's always Wehrmacht in documentaries. Is Heer pronounced "here" or "hair"?

Deputy, not all in jail are convicts, as you well know...

Many men and women are stuck in jails because they can't come up with bond money. Someone might be held for weeks or months before going to trial, while someone with money remains free for the same situation. For a glimpse at civilian Japanese jails see Senator James Webb's website for his Parade Ma...

Have you heard about Vietnam war re-enactors?...

That may not sit well with some Vietnam vets, but it rather tickles me. And I was an infantryman in South Vietnam in 1968.

German POWS in America treated better than illegal aliens...

That's my response to supporters of the 80 year old Arizona county sheriff Joe Arpaio. Did German POWs in Arizona, or any other U.S. locale, have to wear pink uniforms and live in tents? Not from what I've heard. I just wonder how many German POWs in America ended up being illegal aliens in the Stat...

Wutenberg(sp) subway station in Belin...

...appeared to still have unrepaired pock marks from battle damage in 2007 when I visited. (I be off on the spelling of the subway station.) I also noticed some buildings that look battle damaged in Dresden from a train as we passed through the city. A study of Allied bombing after the way concluded...

Number operational German submarines?...

Does anyone have a number for operational totals for submarines for German, Italian, Soviet, British, Japanese, and American submarines during WWII?

What percent of Germans were conscripts?...

I am assuming that a good many Germans stepped forward to volunteer. The US armed forces during World War Two reportedly were about 60% or more draftees.

Percentage of Berlin that was destroyed?...

I was in Berlin a few years ago and from looking at postwar photos of the city, I wondered what percentage of the city was destroyed or severely damaged by allied bombing and Soviet ground fighting. Curious if there is a figure on the damage to Berlin and displaced residents.

Re: POW in two wars...

Dale, can you give us the man's name and if is story has ever been told in print, local newspaper, magazine, or mentioned in a book? This fella being taken POW twice in the same war in two different theaters reminds of the book review I read earlier this year about a Japanese man that witnessed by H...

POW in two wars...

Trying to remember if there were cases of aviators or soldiers being taken prisoner in two different wars. Something about an American aviator possibly being shot down during WWII and then twenty years later in Vietnam. Anyone know of such two war POW experiences?

Maxium age for U.S. conscripts?...

I am thinking it was 28. I never heard of a draftee in the American military during WWII that was 30 or older. Maybe doctors were drafted in their 30s.
