Re: edelweiss riddle

Nika, Is it possible to post the edelweiss attached to the photo of your grandmother? There was also a smaller, stemless, edelweiss worn on the front of the schirmmuetze (peaked cap) of Gebirgsjaeger officers and enlisted men. It was worn between the eagle and the cockade. http://www.muenzauktion.co...

Re: edelweiss riddle

Nika, First of all, perhaps I wasn't clear: I do not know if your pin is WW2-era or not, it could be; they did exist without stem. But, yours looks almost brand new. Here is the postcard I referenced in my above post. I found it on the internet and it is not a clear copy: http://img212.imageshack.us...

Re: edelweiss riddle

Hello Nika, That looks like a garden-variety tourist pin, not a military pin. Though, I have seen early images of a bergfuehrer (ca. 1940 color postcard) with this type of civilian pin on his hat. These pins are still sold in Germany (they were in 1978 when I was in Garmisch). The German Alpine Asso...

Re: Siam.

Siam/Thailand send tropps to westfront to fight against the germans. What happend? There was a small Thai-French Conflict in 1941. But "West Front" -- WWI, right? King Rama VI (1910-25) had been educated in England (at Eton, Christ Church [Oxford] and Sandhurst), and joined the Allies in ...

Re: SS Sturmbannfuhrer Ernst Radeke

Thanks John. So, was he killed near Tuchkalla, or was his Ersatzbataillon near Tuchkalla? I can't tell by the way the formatting transferred when I cut-and-pasted the data.

Many thanks!

Those are mountain boots. Note the Heer Edelweiß patch on his right arm?

Nice job, Hiltraut! When I read your transliteration I can make out the more cryptic penmanship.

Thank you very much.

Re: Hitlerjugend award?

I googled HJ Ehrenabzeichen but only found Golden HJ Ehrenabzeichen and "HJ Ehrenzeichen". This is the HJ Ehrenzeichen:

I can't figure out if they mean H.J. Ehrenabzeichen or HJ. G. Ehrenabzeichen.

It's written in Suetterlin script. I will not read the entire thing because I'm not German and it is a chore for me. (One of our scientists learned Suetterlin when he was in grade school in the 1960s! But I shan't ask him either.) In See den 8.6.39 Lieber Eltern! Heute Mittwoch schrieb ich Euch (dis...

Re: SS-Untersturmführer Heinz Knocke, "Westland"

I found this in John Moore's "Führerliste" database:

Knocke, Heinrich
born 26.12.20 in Paderborn
SS-Nr. 456 076
Ustuf. 4./Pz.Rgt.2 3.45
Rttf. 10./Pz.GR.3 11.41

Appears to be a different Knocke (SS-Nr. differs, as to assignments) ... though, isn't Heinz a diminutive of Heinrich?
