Re: W-SS General on late war footage

Interesting collection of late war footage. As John pointed out, it is Harmel in the first sequences. There's German writing on the buildings, and it might be Pomerania in February 1945, or it could be Saxony the next month. There's no snow, so probably the latter. Some of the scenes are Heer. The K...

Re: Dictionnaire de la Waffen-SS

As John points out, I made a mistake in saying the book covers divisions 7-12. In fact, it covers 7-13! No offense intended towards Handschar :D

Re: Waffen-SS

I was going to suggest what you stated, that the real date must be 1939, when the SS-V, Totenkopf, and Polizei Divisionen were created. Still, it is a fine document to see, so thanks for sharing it.

Re: Dictionnaire de la Waffen-SS

I've received a copy of this, and it has many nice images that will be new to almost everyone who sees them. The first volume covered divisions 1-6, this one has 7-12. You don't have to read French to appreciate the hundreds of new photos, or look through the command rosters. So this new book, and t...

Re: Feldgrau Author: Charles Trang

I saw those photos in the book, and they were the most striking ones of the entire contents, in my brief examining thus far. what a great find, I'm glad you were able to include them!

This is a new edition of the project that Axis Europa released a few years ago as two small paperbacks. Helion acquired the rights and are releasing a nice, hardcover, one-volume version.

Re: Danish volunteers, who???

The year is wrong, this is about events in Kurland in January 1945. The story of a Danish machine gunner seizing a Russian, and bringing him back to German lines for interrogation, is found in Tieke's Tragedy book (page 200 of the English edition). Two pages later, it is mentioned that more than 40 ...

Re: SS-Personalveränderungsblatt from June 1944

The norwegians on page 1 and 2 of the Sonderverteiler dated 14.3.11, all of them who were sent to III.(germ.)SS- Was this the case for other nationalities attending this 11 wartime course? Any comment on the dutch, danes, swedish, wallon and flamish participants? Wasn't Gerardus Mooyman sent straig...

Re: SS-Personalveränderungsblatt from June 1944

Michael, what about Marcel Laperre? Was he part of the 3. LfGO? Or the 11. KJL? Or both? He also was assigned to KG Rehmann after graduating from Bad Tölz, and survived the summer 1944 fighting.

Re: SS-Personalveränderungsblatt from June 1944

I think the III.(germ.) SS-Panzerkorps needed replacement officers as soon as possible. The Langemarck and Wallonien brigades were rebuilding away from the front, so there wasn't such a hurry to get the officers there. As to Walloons not being at the 14. KJL, by the summer of 1944, many Frenchmen we...

Agte indicates in his Peiper book that the awards were actually presented on June 4, the day they were announced. Wisch presented them to the men at one of the training areas in Flanders.

Re: Wiking officers

#7 is identified in Doug Nash's Hell's Gate as being Hans-Georg Jessen, then serving with the Stug. of 4./SS-PR 5 (temporary company commander, I believe). Based on comparison photos, I think it probably is Jessen, but I'm not 100% certain (it might be the guy who commanded the 1./SS-Panzer Abt. 4 o...

Re: “Panzer Grenadier der 5.SS-Panzerdivision ‘Wiking’ im Bild”

Supposedly the fly, or bee, story was a cover for the real reason, Darges' tryst with Gretl Braun. But the only source I have for this is Glenn Infield's book Secrets of the SS, which may not be entirely accurate. The matter of Darges marrying Freifrau von Hadeln is simply from his file, he married ...

Re: “Panzer Grenadier der 5.SS-Panzerdivision ‘Wiking’ im Bild”

Thanks for this good news, Doug! Are you talking about Erich Baumann? And who was Eva Braun's sister? Was that Gretl? My understanding is that during early 1944, Gretl was fooling around with Fritz Darges, during the latter's assignment to FHQ. When she became pregnant, Darges refused to marry her, ...

Re: Operation Rosselsprung Photos

Hi David, I have a couple of photos of Walter Hummel that I can allow you to use. Please email me at [email protected].com so that we can discuss this. Benesch later joined the Jagdverbände, and there's a photo of him in the book Romanian Volunteers of the Waffen-SS, by Richard Landwehr. You can t...
