Re: How elite were waffen SS solders at the last stage of 2 WW?

Matrhias, When with a Ausbildungs Ersatz Abbteilung for basic and gun training our batterie manned from year 1926/25 guy's like me was earmarked to join the 12th (HJ) division which was training in Belgium. Somehow part of our batterie ended up with the 2nd in Russia. Like the guy's of the 12th we w...

Re: How elite were waffen SS solders at the last stage of 2 WW?

Hi HaEn Nice to see you feel better enough to be back here. You got it right, maybe not how elite perhaps more likely how naive. A good example was my last Division. A Division made up of mostly Wehrmacht Artillerie units and one SS Werfer batterie but the CO was a SS Gruppenfuhrer. Andre's friend K...

Sid: You answer : "As far as I can tell, it consists of a statement by a W-SS man present who fingers the W-SS for the Oradour massacre and some later doubts by someone else not present about his statement." Isn't this more or less how most statements and versions sound and leaves to the r...

Andre: I don't see any irony as you do. All I see is reports by veterans, researchers and people who form a opinion based on those reports. You of course dismiss any conclusions which do not support your beliefs as unsubstantiated, incredulous, worthless . Like you have in almost every one of our ex...

Andre: Like I stated before I wasn't there and like you I heard and read about this tragedy. As I was with the 2nd Division in 43/44 of course I would like to know what happened. There are many reports including "T U L L E und O R A D O U R Eine deutsch-französische Tragödie, by von Otto Weidin...

Hi: In a much earlier posting when asked I replied as I was not there I can only offer my opinion. Which is, due to exaggereations and the need to blame someone it will be a long time, if ever, to get the truth. Here is a translation : The Story of Oradour-sur-Glane Sworn Affidavit of Eberhard Matth...

Andre: I mentioned Kammler during a debate with Mr. Miller pointing out that he was one of the few high ranking officers I met/seen. The only conversations I had with them (except Dietrich) was as I recall "jawohl Obergruppen Fuhrer".From what I saw of them and heard from my comrades, they...

You get no argument there I found this out when I got a bullet during my trek back but you still got it wrong. When I mentioned Ivan's intentions I meant what he was going to do with me had I been dumb enough to put my gun down.

Hi John: I did not mean Paddy when I mentioned the poster who so kindly enlightened me about Ivan's intentions while on vacation in Russia. I am talking about another "Historian" who is so smitten with the "vibrant, ambitious and on the whole forward looking people". Had you read...

Heh HaEn, What I find strange about many of these debates is how people tell us what we done and what we seen. In fact one poster told me what I expected from Ivan in Russia and assured me I was mistaken. I just wonder if he was even born then. Why they told us how we were treated and our camps were...

Hi Imad, I don't know what you were told but at my time in 1943 we never used live ammo during training. We used dummy ammo, the ones with a red wooden plug and dummy loaded hand grenades Before shipped East I had fired about 10 live rounds with my 98k and maybe 10 or so with a MG34 at the target ra...

Perhaps it would be interesting as well of any around here who are around 80.
I know of two, HaEn and Rudi.
Anyone else ?
