The legion sent over some NCOs and officers to train them and became part of the 3 regiments they formed. They wore the "pantaloon ...

Sid, the book i have on the legion is "The French Foreign Legion-the inside story of the world famous fighting force" by John R. Young.
It has a short history of WW1 legion in France, but you know Sid regimental histories can be very misleading.

After the war over half the Legion was German, the French used to say "French is also spoken here". After the war the French needed men to guard thier colonies so the recruited in the POW cages.
The saying goes "the German Army didn't die in Europe,it died at Dien Bien Phu".

The US navy believed thier war was in the Pacific, they believed the UK should handle the Atlantic, they also believed the Japanese navy was a lot more dangerous than the German navy. The Japanese navy was, as it turned out, a first class fighting force.

Assult guns were the brainchild of v.Manstien,he wanted infantry to have ready access to a fast moving support weapon, just think how much quicker an armored vehicle can knock out a MG nest than a mortar or calling for artillery, the infantry had lot of faith in assult gun units.

You're right P_R, the allies didn't seem to have many original ideas in warfare but they seemed to copy some German ideas, such as a canon company in each infantry regiment, that idea went over like a lead baloon. Take a turret off a Sherman and install a 17pdr. and you have a pretty good tank hunte...

Assault Guns

The German assault gun units were very successful in aiding thier infantry, why didn't US or UK develop such units? I know we had some 105mm howitzers in tank chassis but they were nothing like the German
Sturmgeschutze units.

Don't the US flag and the "Star Spangled Banner" have unfortunate feelings for some people, but you have to get over it. maybe they'll start singing "The Bonney Blue Flag".
