It seems I'll have to do a better job presenting my arguments. StuGAbt's first encounter This is not correct, as this was Stug.bttr. and Hstuf. Böhmer was the battery's commander. From the remnants of the StuGAbt and the I. /Germania - through refitting and training new personnel - a divisional StuG...

Hard to say really, Reb, but I would still prefer that in desperate situation people do desperate things. It's kind of strange, really, if you look at the actions of v.Schwerin's division in 1942/43, I think few would doubt in his leadership abilities - for example look at the battles at Elista, the...

Just for the sake of the argument, the tank battle at Maciejow was in July 1944 and as far as I understand the Soviet thrust was a prelude to the general offensive in this sector. The Wehrmachtbericht stated that German units destroyed a tank corps and several rifle divisions. where is that? In Jul...

Hi Reb,

It might interest you that the 116th predecessor - 16.Pz.Gren.Div. - went through a similar controversy in early 1944. But as far as I understand the division and its commander von Schwerin were found in both cases not responsible for it.

Another important thing that shouldn't be overlooked is that the personnel for these units was afterall recruited nationwide so not restricted in individual Wehrkreis like most of the Heer formations, furthermore up to 1943 these were in most cases all-volunteer formations, not to mention the select...

Hi panzerschreck1! Here's a couple of answers to your questions. 75.Inf.Div. retreated southwards in a moving pocket and reached the new front-line at Bijela Zerkow where it was then (or rather its remnants) subordinated to 2.SS-Pz.Div. (Gruppe Krüger ?). GD crossed Dneper far more to the South at K...

Hello Andries, Unfortunately neither do Tieke or Fürbringer have such detailed info for the Ardennes Offensive. According to both authors the group [just to note they don't use any designation for the group] was on 23.12. composed from elements of the following units: I./SS-Pz.Rgt.9, SS-Pz.AA9 and I...

23rd Panzer's KG reached the pocket on 16 May, which was then closed again on that same day. 3rd Panzer's finally relived the group on 21st May. Info comes from both units divisional histories ("Geschichte der 3.Panzer-Division" and "Zum Kaukasus und zu den Tauern") which are unfortunately like so m...

Yes, that's right, this was at the start of that counterattack on 16 May. 23.Pz.Div.'s Panzer-KG broke through the Russian defenses and reached Ternovaya but the infantry force was unable to follow-up the success as the Russians sealed the gap and again encircle the Ternovaya group. A few days later...
