My wife's grandfather was a Volksdeutscher from Romonian Banat and was drafted into the 5SS probably because he was a mechanic. I only know he was in the Panzerregiment.

Servus!! I was told by several W-SS veterans that the SS Divisions did not have chaplains. A notable exception was the HANDSCHAR which had moslem Imans. Although they didn't have chaplains, no one whom I have spoken to was ever discouraged from attending church services when they were available. Not...

Servus! I have also heard the argument that once the 6th Army was surrounded, it served it's most valuable purpose in tying down Soviet forces which otherwise could have been used to cut off the troops in the Caucasus. Sounds cold blooded to think of sacrificing an entire army to save an Army Group....

Gustav Lombard

Servus !
Some years ago I read in DER FREIWILLIGE that Gustav Lombard was a relative ( unspecified) of actress Carol Lombard. Does anyone know anything about this? Is this true and if so, what was the relationship?

Thanks in advance

Misbrauchte Infanterie

Servus! I keep seeing Maximilian Fretter Pico's book "Misbrauchte Infanterie" mentioned as a reference in books that I am reading. I own a copy of Fretter-Pico's book " Verlassen des Sieges Goettern." I was wondering , are both of these the same book reissued with a new title. VE...

Servus, Having had a grandfather in the PRINZ EUGEN I take umbrage to the comment that the PE was a lesser Division than the NORD. The PE was formed for and had a completely different mission than NORD. Nord was a front line Division and PE formed for antipatisan warfare. When the PE came up against...

Thanks for the reply. I too would be interested in how long he commanded to Army Groups. Sam Mitcham is correct when he says that Model was the nearest thing to an OB Ost that the Germans ever had. I always liked Model and this just makes him go up even more in my estimation, even with some of his s...

I thought the book was excellent. If there was any fault, it is in not having enough detail on the units at Divisional level to suit my taste, but that's just me. It is one of my favorite eastern front books.

Heeresgruppe Nordukraine

I have been reading Samuel Mitcham's excellent book, "Crumbling Empire." In it he states that Walter Model, concurrently commander HG Mitte and Nordukraine after 28 June44. All other sources which I have to include Tessin and several others show that Nordukraine was commanded by Josef Harp...
