My wife's grandfather was a Volksdeutscher from Romonian Banat and was drafted into the 5SS probably because he was a mechanic. I only know he was in the Panzerregiment.

I have also heard the argument that once the 6th Army was surrounded, it served it's most valuable purpose in tying down Soviet forces which otherwise could have been used to cut off the troops in the Caucasus. Sounds cold blooded to think of sacrificing an entire army to save an Army Group....

As yu may or may not know, the son of Foreign Minister Ribbentrop was in the LAH and Hitlerjugend Divisions.

I thought the book was excellent. If there was any fault, it is in not having enough detail on the units at Divisional level to suit my taste, but that's just me. It is one of my favorite eastern front books.
