Military etiquette.

Can anyone tell me how the normal soldiers addressed their superiors? Did they use any special phrasing when it came to giving an official report or when answering a question? Something along the lines of, "The private begs to report" etc etc.? Or was it a lot looser than how I envisage it...

Thanks a lot to you al who posted replies.
I've looked most of them up on the net and it seems to me that the guys who were shot out of hand by the Russians got the better deal.
