TARA
Tom- Lorenz is correct about TARA, the issue is that the only complete collection of the photos is housed at NARA in College Park Maryland. The effort in the 1940s was joint (US/UK), but the UK only copied selected photos, maps, and other material from the entire captured collection. All the origina...

Hitler Youth air photo school too
Lorenz- Thanks very much, that info helps. Just for clarity, the school was in Hildesheim, but is there data also on how photo recon was tasked and were central operations were run? Lastly, the US National Archives has a two ring binder that was captured during the war that contains material for the...

Luftwaffe aerial recon-photo unit
Does anyone know if/what/where the Luftwaffe had an central aerial recon - photo -mapping - analysis unit, office, or branch? There must have been some central office that did this sort of work. I only know of the Luftwaffe aerial photographic interpretation school being at Hildesheim. Thanks for an...

SS Fechtschule Prag (Fencing School)
I came across these items from a collector about 15 years ago and they have been sitting on a shelf since. I have not been able to find much info on these two small silver goblets but am 99% sure they are real one of a kind items. They are perfectly made except you can tell the script etching was do...

Aid Station
Gef, Another thought, I wonder what the Wehrmacht did with KIA/WIA processing. Did they all get sent to the battalion aid station, then back to the division level medical unit? If so or whatever they did finding a map, or documentation of where that medical unit/division trains were during Jan 44 ma...

NARA issues
Gef- I asked the folks in the Carto branch in NARA about getting photo quality copies and they have no method of doing that in the branch, but on a different floor (text branch) they have photo scanners and printers. They wont let the material move out of the carto area though. So all one can do is ...

1943 Aerial Recon Photos
I discovered the entire area was photographed by the GAF between June and August 1943. There are about 20 photos in that time over and around Borisovka which are held at NARA. I went through about 150 plotting overlays and copied the ones that were over the area (3). I still have not had time to ord...

Cemetary Located..but
Gef- Good news it that I have confirmed the Borisovka cemetary is at 474505.31N 0343605.08E on the eastern side of the village. It is fenced off and it appears to be an old one (a few hundred graves), but with an area just south of this also fenced off that may be an overflow cemetary. The problem i...

The Siege of Budapest
Hey take a look at a recent book "The Siege of Budapest: One hundred Days in World War Two" by Krisztian Ungvary on Amazon. Great book with super deatil and battle maps as well. It talks about where and what armor was used and what dates as well. Further I have complied a roll of US bomber...

Detailed mapping
For the record, they did such great mapping work over the Nordic countries and and the Soviet Union that the British and Americans used these maps during the early Cold War. Also the CIA acutally map the first 100% accurate map of Moscow based partly on the GAF maps which came from aerial photograph...

Possible photos from 1942-1944
Hi- I was a imagery analyst for the US gov for 6 years. I have done extensive research on German aerial photos during the war. Turns out that there are 1.2 million photos (taken buy the GAF) taken during the war mostly over the Eastern Front. Often these photos were taken at the tactical level and o...

Operation "Dick Tracy" -Millions of forgotten phot
As odd as it sounds, this was a real Allied military operation that covered the recovery, recording, and exploitation of captured german reconnaissance photography and cartographic material. Very little of these detailed photos has been seen by the public as it sits in the US National Archives and i...
