KM decoration awarded/recommended
Hello, I’m hoping someone here can help me. I’m trying to find out anything about a Kreigsmarine Unteroffizer named Joachim (possible different spelling) who was recommended for an Iron Cross First Class for an action that took place in the English Channel on 13-14 October 1942. Any information, or ...

KM Joachim awarded 1st class EK
Hello, I’m hoping someone here can help me. I’m trying to find out anything about a Kreigsmarine Unteroffizer named Joachim who I believe was awarded an Iron Cross First Class for an action that took place in the English Channel on 13-14 October 1942. Any information, or advice on how to proceed, ap...

Re: Prisoner of War Camp
My first thought was "Orleans". The way it is pronounced by people around New Orleans may well have sounded, to an outsider, like OILEEN.

Re: Torpedos : float or sink
Try this link: http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WTGER_WWII.htm The German standard torpedo, the G7 series, was almost invariably set to explode at the end of it’s run. I have never seen this spelled out, but I assume it was to keep the secrets of it’s guidance system out of the hands of the Allies. B...

Re: Stalingrad statistics
Thanks, Stephen. I will see if I can get access to the book. Can I ask, does it give a figure for Stalingrad as distinct from total casualties including other battles? Gary, I am sorry not to have acknowledged your reply earlier: that sounds promising and I will try to find a copy. Are any figures m...

Stalingrad statistics
Are there any reliable casualty figures/statistics available for the campaign up to and including the battle of Stalingrad? I would be interested in knowing the stats for both sides week by week or month by month if they are available. If not, perhaps someone can tell me where the 'best guesses' can...

Re: German merchant ships
Mick,
Your question got me hooked: it would be useful to me to know the answer as well. Can you tell me in which files you found the reference? (HW, ADM, DEFE etc?)
Thanks,
Bruce

Re: German merchant ships
Mick, The time frame is important to identify an individual ship. Can you say when the 'M.66' reference was used, and, if you don't mind, where you found the reference? (official records, quoted in book, internet, etc.) Although I don't have the ship M.66 in my notes, I may be able to help when next...

Thanks for the information and sorry about the delay. I suspect the tale is based on a real event, but I doubt if it was a large scale catastrophe or it would be documented better. My best guess is the early arrivals of 8th Air Force equipment in '42, unless the lend-lease deliveries earlier had rev...

Hello, There is a story I have heard all my life but do not know the source: When the US forces during WW11 arrived in the UK they found that their trailer hitches were not the same as those of the British vehicles. Trailers full of equipment were supposedly stranded on the docks. Does anybody know ...

The Luftwaffe ‘Red Key’ was first read by Alan Turings team of cryptanalysts in January of 1940 using the first Bombe decryption device. This was the slow beginning of the process that lead to reading the Ultra intercepts on a regular basis. By March they were intermittently reading three different ...
