Re: 5. Kompanie / Panzergrenadier Division Grossdeutschland ?

Hi,my dad was in the 5th panzer division and was captured by the Soviets and spent the remainder of the war plus a couple of more years after it was over. He must have thought he'd already been sent to HELL until the GULAG. I am still trying to find some info on him with absolutely no success. Cheer...

Revenge Killings

Were revenge killings taken place either during or after the war?
I'm saying that if a high ranking officer was taken out was there a flow on effect?

Re: U Boat

I can't remember reading any accounts of U-boats attacking survivors, but I do know that helping survivors was commonplace. That all changed when an American B-24 attacked U-156 on 12 Sept 1942. The U-boat was helping to rescue suvivors of the sunken converted liner "Laconia" when it was bombed, de...

U Boat

SBS Australia is currently showing the doco "U Boat" (many thanks) and it was mentioned that the Germans mowed down some survivors after torpedoing their ship.I find this very hard to believe and there was no actual proof that this ever happened. Was this propaganda?Maybe someone else has any info r...

Remembrance Day

They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Was Dresden a mistake?

I was watching a ww2 doco (courtesy of SBS Australia) re the bombing of Dresden.I would like to point out that I mean no disrespect to the victims of this Holocaust and my sympathy goes out to those who perished.I believe that I heard the narrator suggest that the bombing was indeed a mistake.Maybe ...

Re: France

According to Adolf Hitlers book "Mein Kampf" (my struggles) he clearly stated what he called his "missions". As one of the embittered veterans of the 1st world war his 1st mission would be to crush France,to wipe out the humiliation of the treaty of Versailes that had stripped Germany of it's army a...

Re: France

Ok I need to go back to my source of information again but I'm pretty sure I heard that the invasion/occupation of France was purely a payback for the defeat of ww1 when AH served in that conflict himself.Whatever the reason was we all know that the times ahead were going to be challenging to say th...

France

Hitler says that his invasion of France was a payback and indeed was a success, but was there any other reason such as strategical or otherwise? When I see the docos about the occupation of France all I seem to see are the Germans partying. Was this just a PR exercise to demonstrate the might of the W...

Re: Russian POW question

Hi there,a few years ago the Vladimir Putin released some information regarding the 2nd world war. I don't know if you can give them a name and hope that they can come up with something but there is no harm in trying. As time goes by we can only hope that the kremlin in all their wisdom can release ...
