My opinion is that the russian dispositions were offensive and that the russians, and, had not the Germans attacked first they would have launched an offensive offensive of their own at some point. However by the time of Barbarossa they were not yet in any shape to lauch such an offensive and it may...

Don't know much actually. I think it was Venitian in the middle ages. It then went into the Austrian empire but I don't know exactly when. Maybe with Venice itself. It's been a border region between Italy and the Balkans for quite some time. I think it was part of the roman province of Illyria. It r...

Well, I'll go and watch it anyways. The problem is that the marketing campaign is so intense that you expect something really exceptional. Just a good movie would be a disappointment.

I think I would have a go for Harald Hardrada (spelling?). He had a fascinating carreer overall. He went to Byzantium and served in the Byzantine Viking Guard. Then went back to Scandinavia through Russia and eventually went on his invasion of England to become King there.....

Well it's an ambitious game but unfortunately they've seen too big, and in the end end you have something that just does not look like WWII. However, with a lot of work in may actually end up in a good game but for the moment it does not really work. I admit the game is very addictive with a lot of ...

Interesting site. My German is rather rusted but I still have enough remnants to understand what it's talking about. :D That's a good starting point.

Many thanks,

Yves.

Well I remember a few unpleasant pictures of dead Iraqi soldiers lying in a pool of blood or burnt in their vehicles, from the first Gulf War. This is infortunately a hardly avoidable sight in war. Now as to how those men died, it is not possible to say.

German Landwehr 1870 - looking for info

Hi, I'm looking for info on the German Landwehr in the war against France in 1870. I have some elements but it's not complete. General guidelines on the overall strength and organisation and elements about some units that were engaged in France. I have some sources at home but nothing precise on Lan...

I'd say there's a whole range of motives. 1- Economics. France has interest there, and once the Americans "Liberate" Irak those economic interests will be dead. 2- Basic Anti American stand. Whatever the French might say France is not much of a world power nowadays and people are jealous o...

The best thing to hope is that is that the Iraki will not put much of a fight and won't try to resist. Moreover it would be good to keep muslim activists out of the country. However foreign fanatic groups are likely to come and stir trouble, like happened in Afghanistan, Chechenya or former Yougosla...

Ok Here's how I would write it in English to sound like French:

That would sound quite like it and should be understandable to French ears.

Well, I guess the main issue is that Irak was about the only muslim country that was on its way to building a modern non religious society. The gulf war and the embargo have pretty much ended that, and the coming war is likely to open the flood gates to fundamentalist movements, which are already ga...

Would someone have reliable figures about the Russian population? around 1939. I've come accross figures anywhere between 150 million and 250 million. That makes a huge difference.

Can someone help?

Yves.
