Re: Novels/Fictional books

And there's always Willi Heinrich's "Cross of Iron," if you haven't read it.

Re: Panzer Division Müncheberg

Flight in Winter is a heavily condensed translation of Thorwald's 2-volume German set. As mentioned above, it was released in 1951. I believe there was a Ballantine paperback edition published around 1965. There was certainly a Bantam paperback from around 1982, which was retitled Defeat in the Eas...

Re: The Bridge (film)

I've seen the 08/15 films quit a few times now and am looking forward to the next I can watch them. Also read the book which I find excellent reading, like much of Kirst's work (though by no means all his work). The original Die Brücke is an excellent film too but I enjoyed the book (by Manfred Gre...

Re: The Bridge (film)

Remakes are seldom as good as the originals. Re-enacting is sometimes sloppy and inaccurate. b.t.w. How many of you have seen 08/15 a trilogy by Hans Helmut Kirst. It actually is an anti war movie, based on his books, made in the early 50's or late 40's; but gives a great impression of life and tra...

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

A few years ago, I made a suggestion that the History Channel (or some network) should produce a one-hour program titled, "Hitler's Forgotten Soldier." It would examine "the real Guy Sajer" and his book. When the movie comes out, there will likely be such a program. By now it loo...

Re: Update to the Forgotten Soldier Movie

Yes, it will be in English - no, Tom Cruise is not associated with it in any way, shape or form. Cheers! I had thought that if a movie of The Forgotten Soldier was made it would be a German production similar to Das Boot and Stalingrad. Instead, it is going to be what used to be called an "Int...

I obtained the book several years ago. It does give information on Feldherrnhalle 2 that you are seeking.

Re: War movies you seldom if ever see on TV

"Ten Seconds To Hell" was on Turner Classic Movies several months ago, the only time I have ever seen it. TCM was showing Jack Palance films that day. I'll try to post the news if this film is shown on TCM again.

Re: Divisional histories in English

Thanks Richard, I'm glad to be helpful. I did a quick look on Abebooks, and found NO copies of Milano's book. I got my copy on one of my visits to John Fedorowicz's office in Winnipeg, years ago. I did find two copies of Agony of a Neutral, but they were $125 and $150! I got mine from a used bookst...

Re: hans-Joachim marseille by Robert Tate

I have the book. It is not a biography as such, but a personality study. There are a lot of new photos and information. The author gives credit to the RAF and Commonwealth airmen and shows that Hans Joachim Marseille was facing strong opponents. The author researches several air battles and evaluate...

Re: Luftwaffe's decline

A book on the German daylight air defense was published last year. It is "The Luftwaffe Over Germany," by Donald Caldwell and Richard Muller. This is the only comprehensive one volume work on the subject. I highly recommend it.

Re: "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer

That part of the book jumped out at me, as well. Sajer was quite definite that if separated from your unit, you would be placed in an Alarm Unit for desperate counterattacks because you were considered dead anyway. This is one of many instances were Sajer gives the distinct impression that he knows ...
