Re: Should the Graf Spee have gone down swinging?

Even if there really was a far more powerful RN force awaiting the Graf Spee, like the captain thought, surely it would have been better to sail out and go down fighting, rather than being scuttled, and burning for three days in front of the whole world? Shouldn't the captain have called for a volu...

Austrian army units absorbed post Aunschluss.

Does anyone know how many were absorbed into Germany's Heer, what their new unit designation was, how much equipment and training was replaced and how many old traditions were retained? And does anyone know how much expertise from the old Austrian army was used in the creation of the Heer's Gebirgsj...

Re: Stalingrad Prisoner Survivors

I understand that 100K surrendered and only 5K were released. Are there still any of those 5K alive. Has any of them written on their experiences. what sources are there for, in general, Russian POW camps. A good place to start would be to read Antony Beevor's famous recent historical bestseller St...

I'm pretty sure that naval personnel were used as infantry in Danzig 1939 and during the Invasions of Denmark and Norway in 1940. I'm also sure that Naval personnel were used as combat Engineers during the bridgehead from Kerch and when capturing the Baltic ports. From about 1944 much naval personne...

Most Embarrassing British military event-just for fun!

I thought I'd lighten the mood with a poll of the military event during the war most embarrassing for Britain.

If anyone can think of one I've left out feel free to mention it.

Heinkell's fighters

Does anyone know anything factual or speculative about the He112 and He100 fighters the Luftwaffe rejected? What were their strengths? did and how did they perform in combat?

The A series of Focke-wulf FW190's (although the F and G series are loveable too).

The 'Dora' Focke-Wulfs

While the Jumo-powered FW-190's could match the Mustang at high altitude, I've read in a few texts that it was less than stellar at low altitudes.

Any explainations or detractions of this?

I'm not going to apologize. No more then I would when describing the hideous crimes of the Germans as they stormed east. No more then I would try and tell you the sun is going to rise tomorrow. No poster is asking you to apologise. Posters are just pointing out how absolutist you assertions are. Of...

Nothing personal sensible but who are you? You weren't part of this discussion but are so opinionated I cant help but think you go by a few names here. Well, I think the general consensus on this thread will agree who's ideas are from opinion (or some guff from the likes of Pat Buchannan) and who's...

The British Empire was the historical model Hitler quoted for his drive for Lebensraum. If the British could displace the populations of North America and Australasia, he saw no reason why Germanics couldn't displace Slavs. LOL. I think the Nazis admired the U.S. treatment of Amerindians more than ...

Re: Captain....

CaptainSensible, I again make the point: Why would Hitler want the English in his brand new living space? Huh? The British already had an empire at the beginning of the war, Hitler was now looking for his own. I seriously doubt Hitler envisioned joining hands with England over anything. Thank God! ...
