Re: FM Alexander

Another thing about FM Alexander is the fact that had he not interfeared with Churchill on Montys behalf during the early days of Alexander-Montgomerys time in Egypt. Then Montgomery would without doubt been sacked for incompentence. Now Monty were able to work in peace and able to use Auchinleks pl...

Hello Rodger True, Monty never served in the Indian army, but he served in India. However Alexander did, he commanded the Nowshera Brigde in Northen India. What I was trying to say was that even though there was some rivalry between the Indian Army and the British Army, there was never any kind of r...

Hello Rodger I am not so sure about the Indian Army thing. Both FM Lord Alexander and Monty served in the Indian Army. Part because there were opportunities for field experience, and (in Montys case) a subaltern or lowranking officer without any means could support himself there. However, the Auk wa...

There is one more thing about Dowding. He must have been a good man, just rember his full name...Hugh Caswell Tremenheere Dowding, nobody with that kind of name can be a bad guy... And about Monty. Rember the converstion between HM the King and CIGS Lord Alanbrooke Alanbrooke said; "When...

Hello again Jan-Hendrik As for the 88, the designers were from Germay, but the design in the begining, was in all essentials Swedish, the German engineers improved it to the "88-efficiency". Later Bofors copied it and built a simliar Swedish gun. And as for the other countries peak. In my ...

Hello Rodger Herbst, there is good to find out that there are men holding a flag for "the Auk". In my opinion, he was a good general, eventhough not great. It might be that Theater command, like the WD, was not his forté. But he did defeate the Italians, he did come up with the plan for El...

Well, the range of artillery is largely dependent on the caliber of the gun, and how long the barrel is (rule of thumb is 1000 meters range per centimeter in caliber). Since the main batteries on the Iowa-class of BB's were 5" greater (as well as the barrel being some 5 meters longer) than the ...

Thank You wiltaz

Although I find it hard to belive that the Scharnhorts/Gneisenau were able to fire as far as 40000+ meters. Even now adays thats quite a feat. This would also mean that the were able to "outshoot" the Iowas of the USN. But as for now....Your figures stand

One amusing fact about the "Colonel Bogey", a part from the different added verses. Is that during the filming, the actors, soon-to-be British prisoners, could not march in cadence, so David Lean told them to sing, whistle or do whatever the wanted, just as long as the marched in the right...

Another aspect of sacking Dowding, is that there are usually no great men, but the best man for particular job. And the men mentioned in this topic, Montgomery, Mountbatten and Dowding, were, like for example Gort (France 40), Spruance and Fletcher (Midway) just the right man for that particular sit...

Range of Main Guns

Hallo everybody, I have been looking for the effective/maximum range of the main guns of the two BB/BC KMS Scharnhorst and KMS Gneisenau. The statistics for the guns of the Bismarck and the Tirpitz are fairly easy to find, as well as the Crusiers and Pocket-Battleships, but not the BB/BC's. However,...

Carrier escorts

I do believe that the designers of the Iowa class of battleship would have disagreed about the fact that BB's never escorted aircraft carriers. The reason why the modern US battleships of WWII had all those AA guns and their high speed was that they were supposed to operate together with the fast ca...

New or rebuilt

I might have expressed myself somewhat confusing. But the fact is that the GZ was not designed as an aircraft carrier from the beginning. The ship was eventually laid down as a transport ship or a merchantman or whatever you like to call it. It was then taken over as a suitable (which it was) hull a...

GZ in all essentials

Gentlemen, I am perplexed... The Graf Zeppelin ESCORTING the Bismark. What ever the reson for the GZ to be completed, it was not to escort a battleship!! Battleships, crusiers and destroyers are supposed to escort carriers, whatever the mission.
