As for the Soviet Marshals, you'll be looking for men who were promoted to the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union or Chief Marshal of [a branch]. There was also the rank of Marshal of [a branch], but it was a four-star rank (confusing, isn't it?). More info: http://marshals.narod.ru/enindex.html An...

In the French Army Général d’Armée was a four-star rank. If you're looking for French five-star officers, you have to look for men bearing the rank of Maréchal de France. Yes, I'm aware that a Général d’Armée had five stars as his rank insignia, but so did Général de Brigade bear two stars -- and a ...

Previous to 1940, the rank of Generalfeldmarschall was a singular and very rare honor; only two were named during World War I (Hindenburg and von Ludendorff). Ludendorff was never created a Generalfeldmarschall, he remained a General der Infanterie to the end of his life. There's a story that Hitle...

One of the mysteries of the war is why the Soviets did not request all of their gear back after cessation of hostilities in 1940 at the end of the Winter War. One theory is that by demanding all that stuff back they would have implicitly admitted losing all that (and more) in the first place. It's ...

AM - Air Marshall
ACM - Air Chief Marshall
AVM - Air Vice Marshall
Shouldn't these be in the following order:

Air Vice Marshal = Major-General
Air Marshal = Lieutenant-General
Air Chief Marshal = General

And there was of course:

Marshal of the RAF = Field Marshal

Short answers: - Finland's aims were initially 1) reclaim the territories lost in 1940 and 2) if possible, to get additional territories to secure as short and secure frontiers against Russia as possible. After it became clear that Germany was to lose the war, Finnish aim was to leave the war with a...
