Re: Reliability of LW kill claims?

Another important point to remember is the Western Allies operated a tour system for their pilots the Luftwaffe didn't. Luftwaffe pilots literally flew till they were maimed, killed or totally burned out, if they were lucky they might be rested for a few months as an instructor. As the war went on t...

Re: JU-88 as a Nightfighter

hey Andy no the Ju 88G-6 title is not published yet, am thinking about including some colour in the book - some photos of digs over the years possibly and profiles as well, plus if not to make it too massive, camo patterns done up in colour, and there will be many. thanks for your interest ...........

Re: JU-88 as a Nightfighter

"I think we need evidence that the He-219 A-7 and the Ju-88 G-6 were real combatants or simply "paper projects" on the order of "Luftwaffe 1946" Ju 88G-6 definitely flew operationally (many loss returns with crew details, W.Nr., vkz), not sure this is the case with the He 21...

The achievements of the fighter pilots of the Soumen Ilmavoimat were truly remarkable. When you consider that for the most part they where flying aircraft regarded as obsolete (H-75A, MS.406, G.50 etc) by most other Air Forces the record is all the more impressive.

Check out this link for Lw flak units. You may be able to find out which units were stationed in areas you are interested in, though there are a lot of units to search through. http://www.ww2.dk/ Click on Ground Units then Flak Units As Jason says tying losses to claims will be very hard. Even if yo...

Hi Paul,

Possibly a government official (civilian) with an equivalent military rank. I know many meteorologist aircrew (Met-Beobachter) fall into this category.

Regierungsassessor (Reg.Ass.) is equivalent to Hptm as is Wetterdienst Assessor (Wd.Ass.)

I don't think it was usual for aircrew to wear the "fried egg" whilst flying so probably not with him when he crashed.

Some aufklärungsstaffeln (Heer) were re-designated as nahaufklärungsstaffeln whilst others soldiered on to the end. I don't know what criteria were used to select units for re-designation, probably just what ever was available at the time knowing the Lw. Nahaufklärungsgruppen Stabe started to appear...

I did a little more digging and found that 13/ JG 52 was manned by Slovaks and 15/ JG 52 was manned by Croats. 13.(slow)/JG 52 was the Luftwaffe designation for 13.Letka. Although 13.(slow)/JG 52 was under Luftwaffe operational control it was a SVZ (Slovak Air Force) unit. It's personnel had Slowak...

Hi AJAB, The photo you are probably referring to is of fhdgy. (Capt) László Pottyondy C/O 102/2 V.Szd with Erich Hartmann. Elements of JG 52 were based at Budaörs along with 102/2 V.Szd Pottyondy never served with the Luftwaffe spending his whole combat career with the Magyar Királyi Honvéd Légieró ...

Try and get hold of "In The Skies of Europe", by Hans-Werner Neulen (ISBN: 1 86126 326 0)

It mainly covers Air Forces allied to Germany during WWII (ARR, MKHL etc) but part III covers foreign flying personnel in the Luftwaffe.
