Re: German Optics Codes and Manufacturers

Glad it was a useful pointer. The Wikipaedia entry is quite good.

Laboratoriumszug Sanitätsinspektion des OB des Heeres 1941

Jens Nestvogel's site www.salonwagen.nestvogel.eu, which is an excellent source for information on the various special trains used by Reich military and civilian leaders, refers to a Laboratoriumszug for Sanitätsinspektion des OB des Heeres 1941 at http://salonwagen.nestvogel.eu/rzuege/liste_sdz.htm...

Re: German Optics Codes and Manufacturers

Hi

I didn't notice Valsts Elektrotehniskā Fabrika of Riga there, who made the Minox cameras and presumably other optical material. Incidentally, Wikipaedia refersw to the US government purchasing Minox cameras mid war. Were they produced under licence there?

Hi Karl-Peter

Thank you. I'm interested in modelling a Siebel ferry with Flak and I'd been looking for pictures and drawings. These are a big help.

Kindest regards

I presume the idea was the same as the 'Q' ships, to lure them in close to an apparently easy target and then hit them hard, particularly as it would enable the use of more readily available shorter range weapons.

Digressing slightly, the Germans were reputed to have had a flak train protecting the Ploesti oilfields that initially looked like a goods train with covered wagons, but which, when attacked, dropped the vehicle sides exposing the flak, rather like the IIRC 'Q' ships of WWI. Does anyone know of any ...

Tito doesn't surprise me, as he was a Croat and hence an Austro-Hungarian citizen, but Serbs do, as the Kingdom of Serbia was obviously independent and allied to the opposite side to the Central Powers.

ISTR that there was something about this, In English, in one or other of the Gehlen biographies. I think he ran them.

Yes. Very interesting article. I have seen that Musicki has been described as having been formerly an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army. Given that he was Serbian and hence on the other side in WWI, this surprised me. I don't seem to be able to find any biography of Musicki. Does anyone know of o...

Interesting stuff. I live in Istria, the Northern part of which is in Slovenia and I'm very conscious of the shifting of boundaries around here. It is something which is alien to most Brits but obviously relevant to many parts of the rest of Europe. The Croats and Slovenes, having been part of the l...

Re: Did US Army Labor Service recruit former SS Members?

Yes, indeed. I was as a german national 1953-56 driver in a German Labor service Co. In our 36th LS Center Esslingen, we had seven companies of each appr 200 men. One Co was made up of mostly Latvians and stationed in Ludwigsburg. The Latvians were mostly former members of the SS Foreign Volunteer ...

Thanks. It sounds like Bleiburg. They surrendered to the British, who promptly handed them over to Tito's people, who shot most out of hand almost immediately and did a death march with the rest. It was another cossacks type episode. These were mostly regular army troops with, often, their families....

Mielau

Actually, it would appear to be in East Prussia.
