I own the wehrpasses of the following Heer officers. The wehrpass contains information about the schooling of the holder. The list below doesn't include previous pre-war military experience. Quite a high proportion of the below served two years or more as other ranks in the 1930s - alot as voluntee...

Your posts show the lack of the most basic knowledge about the problems the Waffen-SS promotion system and lack of experienced officers brought along. That you think the faster a promotion the better the officer supports the impression that you do not have the slightest understanding of the topic. ...

Sid. Well, I've posted this before and I'll post it again: Finnish captain Y.P.I. Kaila served with Wiking for ten months, starting from the beginning of Barbarossa. He wrote this in 1942 as part of a report. Bear in mind this is Wiking, often held up as one of the best SS divisions, even in June 1...

Hi Gelbermeteor, I rather suspect that if a W-SS division was coming to the rescue it was one of the senior armoured ones. As for comparitive losses, we have discussed this before on Feldgrau. It seems that early on in Poland the W-SS was not particularly tactically competent and suffered high loss...

Just found two new pictures on Meierdress from an excellent norwegian website with tons of photos... See adress below: Regards, Krollspell Hello Doktor Krollspell, this may be an irrelevant question, but I have been wondering for quiet a while about the use caps or hats. From the pic of E. Meierdre...

But I agree it's very much the 'eliteness' and 'martial prowess' of the better W-SS divisions that the historiography available in English tends to highlight, particularily with regard to 1943 onward. I can't say for sure just how comparitively elite these divisions were without more to compare the...

Well Panzergrenadier was the term for a certain type of unit. There were various versions of Panzergrenadier formations but it had nothing to do if they were equipped with SPW or not. Here a Panzergrenadierkompanie with trucks http://chrito.users1.50megs.com/kstn/kstn1114afg1nov44.htm While here we...

Hi, What I find baffling is the idea of a country jailing a man for murder and then later granting him a state funeral, without him having done any service for the state in the intervening period. That makes no sense at all. I've written to the Protocol Office of the Federal Ministry of the Interio...

Re: Sepp Dietrich's funeral
From the Wikipedia article on Sepp Dietrich: In 1966 Dietrich died of a heart attack in Ludwigsburg at age 73. Thousands of his wartime comrades, as well as former adversaries, came to his funeral. He remains the only veteran of the Waffen-SS to be awarded a state funeral by the FRG. 'Former advers...
