Re: What happened to bombs that missed ?
Andre, based on the additional information I would agree with your analysis that the explosions were from the bombs. As I said earlier, we really don't know what type of ordnance was. It would be very difficult, I would think, to know the difference in the sound... depth bomb or other. I have heard ...

Re: What happened to bombs that missed ?
Andre, I can respond to this as a retired Navy Torpedoman, familiar with ordnance. :[] Assuming the fuse was for armour piercing, it probably would not explode on contact with the surface or bottom nor would it likely detonate from sea pressure. In very deep water it could crush but if it did explod...

Movement of support personnel
In my research I have discovered one cardinal rule, THERE IS NO CARDINAL RULE! Things were done to meet the situation at hand. In the spring of 1940 when the German forces were raceing across Europe, technical support moved by whatever means necessary to keep up with the rapid advance. Usually, the ...

It was not the Poles, Germans or any other entire nationality of people who shot pilots or others dangling from parachutes. It was individuals, of ALL nations, that committed atrosities or acts reprehensible to us today. Some were ordered either in writing or verbally while others were on the spot d...

"Schlachtfeld Luftfahrzeug"(Battlefield Aircraft)
Thanks to the suggestions of some of you, I have finally found a copy of Harald Vogt's excellent book on the "Black Men" of the Luftwaffe- the men who kept the planes flying, who loaded the bombs and the guns. Through the Interlibrary Loan System I got a copy from Harvard University Librar...

No Tiornu, I'm thinking of hedgehog, the system I studied some 30 odd years ago when I was a budding Torpedoman. I will wiave to your spigot mortar desciption. I used the word 'rocket' very loosely. The propelling charge did no more than throw the bomb in the air where it would hopefully not ...

Hedgehog ASW weapon
The hedgehog was a rocket propelled depth bomb with a contact fuze and it carried a rather small but effective charge. Launched from beds either fore or aft on asw vessels they created a pattern designed to "detect" subs. If one went off it meant a sub had been hit and then the ship would ...

Germany could have completed a successful carrier but the fact is Adolf lost interest in capital ships after the loss of ships like the Bismark and diverted resources to subs. Had he given the Navy until 45 to start war as he stated in the 30's they would have had a naval air arm afloat. By then the...
