Re: Famous photograph, what is his story?
Given the now advanced age of this thread I'm still amazed that it still invites discussion. I suppose that is because this image has become regarded as almost iconic to WW2. Regards, Simon. It is surprising to see the thread I started seven years ago still at least marginally active, and unfortuna...

Re: I'm Back!
Avete,
Welcome back, Ian. I, too, have been dormant these past years (due to much time at sea) but have been spectating for most of the time and am glad it is still going. I thank all of the old crowd (and the new) for keeping this all going, I really appreciate it.

Foreign Legions
Avete, I know of the French Foreign Legion and Yhe Spanish Foreign Legion, but what else is out there for someone who wishes to join foreign militaries? Are there other foreign legions? Which countries allow foreigners into their militaries? Yes, I know this isn't necessarily on-topic, but this seem...

Wound Badge Certificate
Avete,
does anybody have a certificate for the earning of a wound badge? Any grade will do. If someone would scan it in and/or simply post the image I would be very grateful. Thanks

Re: If you are a WW2 historian after a scoop of a story....
Hello all. To my surprise, they said that they have actually both identified and contacted the man, telling me that he now lives in the USA but respect his wishes to keep his name private. If I were a WW2 historian/journalist/documentary maker, I would surely consider getting an interview with this...

Letters of Notification
Avete,
When a soldier died in combat, what was the nature of the letter of notification sent to the family? Was there something of a template that the name, rank, etc. of the soldier was inserted into?
What were they like? Does anyone have a picture of one?

Avete, Berlin Dance of Death by Helmut Altner. A fascinating first hand account of the Battle of Berlin. It very well captures the chaos of that final battle. Iron Coffins by Herbert A. Werner. It was recommended above and I will recommend it again, it is very good. The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Saje...

Avete, The effect of a bullet hitting the body has far too many variables to really say what damage is done or how it feels. The angle, range, velocity and calibur of the bullet all are factors. There are even small things such as what the body part was doing when it was hit. Just speaking from pers...
