Its slang and the meaning is "with very high velocity"; it is even today a phrase used in colloquial German

I read in a German book about ground operations of German paras in the East and the West that members of the 7. Flieger Division (the later 1. Para Division) said after their service in 1941/42 near Leningrad: "prefer 3 x Crete than 1 x Russia." Tenency and cruelty of Russian soldiers were...

Somehow I have the impression the subject of this thread had changed...was it not in the first step "magnificience of Russian tacticts" and isn't it now "magnificience of the Russian foot soldier"? And changed with my reference to WWI German tactics? ;-) BTW what about the "...

I think the tactic described by Igor N is called "indirect approach". And was is not invented by German troops during the 1918 offensive on the Western front..together with the concept of combined forces? It is also the concept on which Blitzkrieg-Tactics are focussed. Find the weak spot, ...

what about this, you "Eisenfresser" :-) Make a peace with france, BeNeLux, Denmark and Norway as Bismarck did with Austria in 1866, not as the allies with Germany in 1919. Then negotiate with the Commonwealth for peace. What will they do when everybody see that Germany do not want to conqu...

one addition to the very comprehensive information above:

Hallo all, I would like to add some remarks concering quality of German troops. Beside the lack of artillery and air power, do not forget that the German army was never fully motorized. In 1944 the "bodenständige" infantry division were even not ablke to move their artillery. They even lac...

literature about German paras in market-garden

I have the book "Die deutsche Fallschirmtruppe 1942 - 1945: Einsätze auf Kriegsschauplätzen im Westen und Osten" (Author: Hans-Martin Stimpel): It describes in detail several combat groups formed with paras which fought in this battle. Stimpel himself was paratrooper and servered later in ...

Again, with the exception of Arnhem and Dieppe I remember no case during WW II where any major landing operation failed neither of the Axis nor of the Allied. This is an interesting point because from a statistical point of new this would mean that such operations which should be rather difficult ha...

This question is a central question. Some remarks from German born in 1961 with parents who were 15 and the end of the war and relatives, i. e. uncles who served in the Army: My parents, they were children in this period, told me that they believed in this period that Germany was fighting on the rig...

Yes, I thought about the issue the other way round, i. e. in which cases the Germans tried to cross a major river and were beaten. I remember no case but I have to confess that I have only a high level knowledge about the Russian campaign. Nevertheless, it seems to be that in all cases river crossin...

I think SPWAW is really impressing. You have to apply real life tactics to fight and this shows, how good the game is. Only the mechanics applied at river crossings are a bit curios. Carrying inflatable rafts does not hamper the infantry. I trained this in reality in the Bundeswehr and I have to say...
