Re: SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment “Germania”

I wish I could help you as I met Horst Wagner many years ago who was in der 8. / SS-Panzer=Grenadier=Regiment 9 Germania. I just received information from the Deutsche Dienstelle in Berlin and his records are very slim. His last rank was Unterscharfuehrer and he survived Soviet captivity being relea...

Landesschützen-Bataillon 20

Does anyone have information on this battalion. They were considered 3rd rate soldiers and mainly worked in prison camps. My friends Father was a Wehrmact Officer with this battalion for a short period in 1943.

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

I just finished the book Retreat to the Reich from Stackpole Military History Series and gives an account of how many Panther Tanks both the 9th and 10th ss had just before Market-Garden: Page 243 The II SS Panzer was not at full strength--far from it, in fact. The 9th SS Panzer Division Hohenstaufe...

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

I will talk with Willy this weekend. He has been in the United States since 1954, so he never kept up with his comrads. He does not have a computer so how is the best way I can contact you? He still has a heavy Bavarian accent, but his english is very good.

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

Martin thank you for the information as it is very interesting. I talked with Willy yesterday before I saw your last blog and he verified he was in Mailly-le-camp as a Panther Driver/mechanic. He said the soil was so wet and caused many tracks to be thrown and he hated being so dirty from the light ...

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

The Pz.Lehr division continued fighting British forces until relieved by the 276. Inf.Div. This was accomplished gradually between 26 June and 5 July. June had been a month of intensive fighting for the Pz.Lehr divisions. Casualties during June amounted to 490 killed in action, 1 809 wounded and 673...

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

Have you read Sons of the Reich II SS Panzer Corps by Michael Reynolds? Page 17 is a quote from the book on the Frundsberg Division "The 1st SS Panzer Battalion of the Division, which readers will recall had been left an Mailly-le-camp (approx 220 kms east of Paris) awaiting the issue of its Pa...

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

If you have read German Armor in Arnhem, the Frundsberg Divison with 10 Panters arrived in the Arnhem area from Grafenwoehr, Germany on September 21, 1944. This is the first time I had seen Frundsberg Tanks. However my Friend Willy Wagner was a Panther Tank Driver with the Pazerwart im Gold showing ...

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

John, I grew up with stories from both sides of the war. Willy's with the 10th SS and my father's with the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima. I have quite a few pictures of Willy and his father and also my father on Mt. Suribachi. His father was also in the area working on defensive works as Kampgrupp...

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

John, Willy was in Alsace and told me two stories: Willy had just finished repairing his Panther Tank and they took it on a test run. They happened upon a sign "Kampfgruppe Wagner" and Willy asked if they could see if it was his father's unit. As they drove down the road it caused quite a ...

Re: Status of 9+10th SS PAnzer Division Pre Arnhem

I have a good friend who just turned 84 that was in the Frundsberg Division, Regiment 10 (Langemarck) first Battalion (Panther Tanks). He has talked to me about many of his experiences, but very little about Arnhem. He had one of the very few Panthers left after their retreat from France and Belgium...
