Best One Volume Book on the Eastern Front
Given all of the scholarship over the last few years, what do you think is the best one volume overview of the war on the Eastern Front during the Second World War? Something new or one of the old standard works?

Eastern Front Combat: The German Soldier in Battle from Stal
Eastern Front Combat by Hans Wijers. Anyone read this book? Thoughts and comments? My reading list is pretty long, but I thought about picking this one up.

Re: HUGE WANT LIST !!
I have to disagree with the panning of Frontsoldaten by Stephen Fritz. I think it is one of the best on your list. Fritz takes most of the German soldier memoirs, distills them down to some of the best quotes from each book, and analyzes the phrases. Quite frankly, I think it is remarkable scholarsh...

Re: Out-of-print book updates
Turning Point by P.P. Popov, A.V. Kozlov, and B.G. Usik has been republished by Leaping Horseman Books in English. This was one of the first eyewitness histories to the Battle of Stalingrad published in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. Accordingly, the authors felt no need to subscribe to ...

Re: The Blue Max by Jack D Hunter
The BLUE MAX is only Book 1 in the Bruno Stachel trilogy. The sequels are THE BLOOD ORDER and THE TIN CRAVAT. The sequels follow Stachel through the end of World War One and into the postwar period as he gets involved in the Nazi Party.

Re: A Magnificent Disaster by David Bennett
I saw the same advertisement. I could not find anything on the author, David Bennett, so I am going to hold off on a purchase decision until some reviews come in. I will say that Robert Kershaw's IT NEVER SNOWS IN SEPTEMBER: THE GERMAN VIEW OF MARKET-GARDEN AND THE BATTLE FOR ARNHEM is one of my fav...

Re: Leningrad by Michael Jones
I have read Michael Jones prior book, Stalingrad: How the Red Army Triumphed. The book is well-written, well researched, and completely changed my view of the battle. In fact, my only complaint about the book was it did not go into as much detail with the later phases of the battle as it did with th...

Re: Books on the Crimean Campaign
I suppose I could go to the books on Field Marshal von Manstein's career. I read Lost Victories years ago. Can any of you recommend Field Marshal von Manstein: The Janushead - A Portrait by Marcel Stein?

Re: Gert Ledig - Payback
Quite frankly, one of the best books about war ever written (and I don't say that lightly). Ledig's other work, published under several different names, but all the same book - The Tortured Earth, The Stalin Organ, or The Stalin Front - is equally as good. Ledig wrote his two masterpieces and then c...

Re: Books on the Crimean Campaign
Thanks Richard. Sounds like its time for someone to write a comprehensive history. Between Perekop, Sevastopol, the multiple battles for the Kerch peninsula, and everything inbetween, one would think there is tons of material to justify a standard work for the campaign. Since the seizure of the Crim...

World War Two sites in the Crimea
I plan on visiting the Crimea next year. Can anyone who has been before recommend some must see sites or sites to avoid? The primary focus of my trip will be the German/Romanian attempts to capture the Crimea in 1941-42, the occupation, and the Soviet counter-offensives later in the war. I am partic...

Books on the Crimean Campaign
Can anyone recommend any good books on the Crimean Campaign of 1941-42, the subsequent occupation, and Soviet counter-offensives in 1944? The only books I can find are Osprey's Sevastopol and Sweeting's Blood and Iron: The German Conquest of Sevastopol (which has not received good reviews on Amazon)...

Achtung Schweinehund!
For anyone on the forum who grew up in England during the 60s and 70s devouring Leo Kessler and Sven Hassel novels and playing with Airfix toy soldiers, I hightly recommend Harry Pearson's latest book, Achtung Schweinehund!: A Boy's Own Story of Imaginary Combat. Pearson, who apparenlty grew up not ...
