Pirmasens

Hello Helmut, 6.SS Nord was in this region, but had to pull out and move to the Hunsrück at the end of February. Before, it was actually farther to the East and only for a few days it occupied the area south of Pirmasens, to cover the sector previously covered by 2. Geb. Div. The people you have see...

Hello Loic, I think this could interest you: One of your fellow countryman just published a fine title: Alain Verwicht's Hors Serie No 3 of Panzer Voran! exclusivly deals with HG. It contains a commented Gliederung dated 16. April 43 and a nice series of photos. The pics taken in Sicily eg show a Gr...

Hello Wolfkin,

Don't forget the Roncey pocket regarding DR. It is a good example on how apt the Germans were to get out of hopeless situations. Especially Eastern Front vets seem to have had a deeper understanding on how to bug out...

Hello Piet, This could indeed be the reason behind. I just looked up the Soll Gliederung for a type 44 Waffen SS Division (a copy of which can be found in Wood/Dugdaleßs book on Waffen SS units in Normandy). Again 18 sPSW and 4 le PSW, so after all it would seem that I. SS Pz Korps just followed the...

Án answer and a question

Hello Timo Piet is on the right trail. You will find several Gliederungen from LAH from the same date, reflecting Soll and Ist. So you have first to find out which one to use for which purpose. The June 43 list refers to the Soll. It is far away from the Ist. In other documents you will find orders ...

Hello, The problems I have while reading Venhor are the following: It looks like right away a Vorausabteilung was created that had to join the Invasionsfront at once. Like that it was clear that LAH would fight alongside HJ from the start, possibly in the Caen region. This is far away from the truth...

Operation Spring, Normandy 44

Dear fellow posters, I'm trying to get more info on the action at Troteval Ferme during Operation "Spring". Especially I try to confirm that the German unit defending this spot was 1./AA 1-as stated in Lehman's unit history and Ritgen's book Western Front 1944. I'm lacking in sources to do...

Hello Timo Marko is perfectly right. Langemarck was a Kradschützen Regiment, I./Langemarck was created from the SS-Kradschützen Btl 2. In November this Btl. was part of a force that was at Toulon to prevent the French fleet from scuttling. Time fits with the foliage gone on the scrubs in the pic. As...

Waffen SS and Faith

Hello, Major Günter Scholing (2. Panzerdivision) once wrote about a Lehrgang he attended in spring 44 with officers of AOK 7 also attended by officers of the Waffen SS. ".... All of them wonderfull comrades. Not always that gentlemen-like the officers of the Waffen SS. While visiting during our...

Hello Baltasar Truth is in the eye of the beholder. The story is told in the book I mentioned in my post. The author is no amateur historian. He interviewed the Swiss pilots and had access to Swiss military documents. The Swiss excuse and the offer to pay for the dammage all exist in written form. T...

A few points to a vast subject: It is true that the Germans made fake transports to make the French believe that an attack on Switzerland in 1940 was imminent. If this would take place, an attack on France via the Jura mountains (Swiss-French Border) would of course outflank the Maginot line. This r...
