Antony Beevers book 'Berlin' gives great detailed knowledge on the Fortress towns in the East such as Breslau and Poznan.

The fortress towns were mostly and deliberatly held by soldiers who lived there, that way they would fight harder.

The Crazy Helmets did indeed exist however it was a derogatory term used by the soldiers to tell of the certain battalions which were entirely composed of men who had lost evrything. There were around 4 or 5 of these and i do believe that one company fought in Holland.

Field Gendarmerie units groomed the rear areas of the frontline for strgallers or deserters. Most were sadists who just like to kill people on trumped up charges, but a number of Whermacht officers executed there men who deserted as they wanted to show an example of traitors.
