Hey James, Well when I went through my basic training (1998) we were never trained to swing out rifles like a baseball (or cricket) bat, that way you have a lot less control over your weapon...if they catch the stock and you have a round in the chamber, you could wind up un a world of hurt. When usi...

Italian T-34's

Hey Lupo,
This is true that there were more than likely not very many T-34's in Italian service, but they must have had some luck combating them since a sugestion for the P.40 "Heavy" tank was to install T-34 engines as a sufficient Italian engine was not available.

German Patriotism

Greetings! Well now that Angela Merkel has become the new Chancellor, she has brought in several German Pride advertisements. The goal here is simply to help Germans to keep their chins up. They have re-paid their debts (including the Schutstruppe in Tanzania from WW1), and are currently an industri...

Hungary According to Osprey

According to my readings, Hungary joined the "Crusade in The East," mostly because they felt obliged to. Germany had assisted Hungary in regaining a lot of teritory which was lost in the Treaty or Tirannon (sp?) of 1920. This brought Horthy further into the Axis. Horthy, not wanting to los...

Going with Only Slovakia?

Hello Gents, What about Germanys allies in Barbarossa? Would they have joined as well? Finland: May act historicly and take back their territory which was lost in The Winter War. Croatia: May or may not exist, depends if Yugoslavia was invaded. Hungary: By summer of 1940, there really were not may r...

Well for "Allo Allo," the episodes are hit or miss...With Season 1 it takes a while for the plot to develope, and it definatly takes a certain kind of humor to appreciate. My favorite character would have to be the Policeman though, speaking bad English with a lowsy French accent. I will a...

The Good, The Bad, The Cheesy

War movies come out in such a variety now. Fortunatly they're getting better now. I'll start with the Good...in no particular order: 1. The Winter War: I don't speak Finnish, and I'm sure the subtitles arn't the most acurate, but wow, it's good. 2. Saving Private Ryan: Excellent D-Day, effects of sh...

Hungarian AFV's

According to "History of The Hungarian Army in WW2," (Sorry, I'm in Iraq and cannot quote my sources) The Hungarians knew that their home produced armor was obsolite against the modern Soviet AFV's, however they did have a good number of Turan I's and II's, along with the Zrindi (sp?) assu...

Romainan Army

Mike, Don't put down the Romanians at Stalingrad. The resistance that the Romanians put up on the flanks put the Soviets a couple weeks behind schedule. The Romanian performance at Stalingrad is often simplified in a similar way to the German blitz into Poland. Both the Romanians and Poles fought va...

View of Seydlitz Soldiers Post-War

Hey, thanks for bringing this up. I've been wondering for a while about how the Seydlitz soldiers who fought WITH the Soviets were viewed by their (former?) countrymen after the war. Did most of them settle in East Germany, or were they sent into the gulags as spies and enemies of the state? -Richar...

Vichy in Syria

Enrico mentioned a lot of hard fighting in Syria towards the beginning of this thread, could anyone provide some sources or information about what went on in Syria? On another note, I'm glad this thread sparked so much interest in so many people! One thing that I learned was that I put this thread i...

Mooyman,
You should read Siegfried Knappe's book "Soldat." It has everything you just waned in a movie, plus his time in a Soviet prison.

Sid, I think the reason behind the interest in this subject is probably because of all the "Westerners" found fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan. Now the governments of the United Kingdom and the United States have no idea how to deal with these unexpected prisoners. So if thye'd simp...

Indeed, there should be a Band of Brothers type movie, or mini-series about every nation who fought in the war. There really hasn't been enough media put out about the other nations. Most WW2 movies and mini-series put the British in a real bad light, they're almost made to seem as incompetent as th...
