KG in Dubrovnik, Cavtat, Bay of Kotor area of Croatia

hi all, A quick and vague question. Would anybody know of any KG units in the Dubrovnik, Cavtat, Bay of Kotor area in Croatia during the war ? I'm guessing the Italians may have had more of a presence. I have particular interest in Cavtat, due to the presence of an excellent naturally protected harb...

Romanian Volkdeutsche Vet

hi all, I was in Darmstadt on business over the weekend and one of my German colleagues had to attend his Grandpas birthday party while I was there. My friend moved to Germany with his family from Romania about 15 years ago. He told me his Opa had been drafted in 44 as a teenager and captured by the...

Luftwaffe veterans living in Ireland

hi all, I though a few of you may be interested in this. On Monday evening last, there was a TV show 'Leargas' on RTE1 (Irish State TV) that covered two Luftwaffe airmen who were interened here during WWII, met local ladies, married, and returned to live in Ireland after that had been repatriated to...

Numbers of / Allied treatment of female POWs

hi.. Alfred Nowotny's book, "The Good Soldier" got me thinking on this. Von Lucks book also briefly touches on the subject. Does anybody have figures for Nurses, Blitzmadel etc. that served on all fronts. Casualty figures, number of them taken POW etc.. and their treatment while incarcerat...

Male/Female POW interaction in Soviet Camps 1947

hi all, On page 134 of his book, "the Good Soldier", Alfred Nowotny states that when he was prisoner in SU in 1947, the Soviets began to mix some of the female POWs with the males, which resulted in some pregnancies. These people were offered accomadation outside of the camp, where the new...

hi all,

Could anyone point out what Bittrichs post war activities were ? It's an area often neglected concerning well known vetereans, and I'd really be interested in finding out not only Bittrichs, but also other high ranking veterans post war careers.

Receding Danube - Unconvered war debris

hi all, from todays Irish Independent (30 Sep), it states that the receding Danube is revealing war debris as its waters fall to the lowest level in a century. Serbia: German Danube fleet has reappeared at the port of Prehovo, 110 miles east of Belgrade, with steel masts protruding from the water. C...

hi .. Getting back to my initial mail, I remember now where I heard about the Hungarian POWs in British custody. It was in the closing pages of Friedrich August Freiherr Von der Heydte's book about his experiences in the Fallschirmjäger. I recall he wrote that they were "splendid fellows"....

I'll check when I'm back in Barcelona in the Autumn on the off chance the exhibition is still on

Panthers in Iran / Iraq war

hi all.. I saw (very quickly I might add, due to the wife and kids) a photograph in Barcelona last week of a Panther tank (mode type ??) that was a war trophy / memorial in Iran. The photo was taken in the late 80's. Does anybody have more info on Panthers used by the Iraqi army in the Iran Iraq con...

Hungarian Units in contact with US/British forces

hi.. I am interested in finding out if Hungarian Armed forces had any fighting contact (land only!) with US or British forces towards the end of the war. I have read before of Hungarian POWs in the UK after 1945 which lead me to think that there may have been isolated incidents, potentially in Austr...
