The document is Ferdinand's curriculum vitae, which he sent in to ask to be given German citizenship. Both Ferdinand and his wife are Volksdeutsche. In 1937 he went to Temesburg (Romania) to work in a factory and was then drafted into the Wehrmacht where he was trained as a policeman. After the war,...

Not all Germans like Sauerkraut. And they DEFINITELY don't like it on their hot dogs! ;P

London isn't that expensive, depending on where you plan to stay and eat. I've done the Youth Hostel thing (yuck!) and there are a lot of affordable hotels as well. Plus, if you're like me, you'll probably only come back to the hotel to sleep and shower. There are also a lot of really good pizza and...

How about a mix of Indian and German cuisine, ie. CurryWurst?

;)

And sorry, I can think of a ton of things I'd rather eat than Indian food. Doener Kebabs come to mind. Yum. They need to have those in the US.

I have been to London a few times, and I will definitely second Überhauptnichtsführer in saying you should see the RAF Museum. I think this is one I've enjoyed the most out of all the museums in/around London. The trip there doesn't take very long on the Underground and there's a station real close ...

If you ever get a chance to get a hold of it, it's a very useful book. I've had my copy for quite some time and it's come in very handy with some words I didn't know the translation for in the past.

"In a way we are advancing in competition with the enemy, the bulk of whose forces are also pushing northwards west of us to cross the Bzura and push forward along the Weichsel, before we and our sister division, which is attacking from the other shore of the Bzura, have closed this last gap.&q...

It's actually not that unusual a thing to find. One of my friends recently got back from Iraq and he said they found a bunch of World War II weapons, including an MP40. He didn't get to keep it but he got to take some pictures with it and with some of the other stuff they found. I also have a pictur...

I was referring to Guernica for the fact that it's well known and generally hailed as a masterpiece. It's not everyone's bag of nuts (I'm not exactly fond of Picasso's work in general), but it's one of the better known works of art.

Sid,

And those are good points, but I think they're kind of irrelevant to the discussion. Don't you agree?

I have a photograph of him with his mother and grandmother after the war. I am not sure when he was born. He has a brother by the name of Franz Johann Egner who was born in 1931. I believe Heinrich was born in the 1920s.

There is a big difference between commemorating and celebrating something. I think that the 60th Anniversary of D-Day is a huge dog and pony show, personally. Mainly because I was there for the 50th and hardly got to see anything or talk to anyone because of the massive amount of people who were the...
