IMO the CBO was only partial successful. The major success (without doubt) was the destruction of the oil industry you mentioned. The second part, i.e. destroying the weapon industry, failed as we can see the production numbers climbing and climbing despite the bombing. However, some historicans (e....

Eifel, Rhein, Ruhr 1945 and SS-Gebirgsjäger

Hi folks, Yesterday evening I watched a documentation about the (late February to early April) 1945 western front ("When the war came to Germany") a US Army movie from this time. Covered area was Köln-Koblenz-Remagen, or better Ruhr-Eifel-Rhein. I noticed lots of soldiers (POWs) with SS in...

BTW, the division was never a "Panzergrenadier" division, it was formed from 16. Inf.-Div. (mot.) From the unit history homepage I see that the 16.ID (mot) was renamed as 16.PzGrenDiv on 23.06.1943 before it was afterwards reformed as 116.PzDiv In 1940 the 16.ID was divided and formed the...

sid, Thank you for this lesson. I was aware about the italian troop deployment along the border but until now more regarded it a behaviour born from competition whi will be THE leader of fascism. Indeed I was not aware about the Austrians leaning towards "classic" fascism. This is very int...

Matt, Thanks a lot for the input. I hust wondered because todays "Panzerfaust" projects a rocket-propelled grenade (but is reaching 400m however...). Of course you took something wrong: Its tail is solid wood with a sheet steel end cap In fact this is the well-known and legendary "woo...

Hi all, does anybody know what was the artillery equipment of the 116th Panzerdivision? I mean was it self-propelled, or towed artillery? As this division was formed from the former 116. PzGrenDiv, former 16.InfDiv (mot) I wonder if the equipment was upgraded to support faster movement? (the reason ...

sid, what dimension had the "sponsoring" of the 1934 coup by German Nazis? My knowledge is limited to a few persons acting and they all were native Austrian Nazis. I also remember there was a defined "Austro-Facism" acting independent from Germany but at last with the same target...

Matt, As far as the 'exhaust gasses' being a problem, you have to remember that the Panzerfaust isn't a rocket weapon, but a projector weapon; the grenade itself wasn't powered, but shot by a black powder charge in the barrel. Are you sure the grenade was not powered itself? I think it was a project...

I know that modern Austria have had (and still have) a very complicated (some would say schizofrenic) relation towards its own history of 1938-1945. The popular "myth" of being "the first victim of Nazi Germany" is/was very strong I wanted to mention that but the Doktor was fast...

Did you read the writing on the b/w photo? "After the Führer signed her an autograph, she was lucky to be photographed together with him"

Sounds like "popstar"
