The revamped IWM...

Finally paid a visit the other day and... I didn't like it much! That lovely atrium! Ruined! Is it just me?!

Ari Taub's "The Fallen"

Fairly random selection of a cheap DVD in Cash Converters unexpectedly reconnected me with the film I saw some years ago titled as, I think, "Letters From Dead Men", I'm not sure it's the exact same edit, but anyway, again found it a pretty involving film. Anybody else given it a try? It's...

Generation War TV movie

Has anyone caught this yet? BBC2 promised here, but as far as I'm aware hasn't yet delivered - previews look pretty good.

Re: Goodbye Maximillian Schell

Sadly the news got rather lost in all the Philip S Hoffman flurry (whose work I'm less familiar with so can't comment). Seems we just lost Pa Walton also!

Thomas Kretschmann in Stalingrad. Again.

I can only imagine the sense of deja vu German actors must get when their agent calls telling them there's a juicy role as a Wehrmacht officer going. Still, did Thos. Kretschmann really need to revisit old ground? Don't know about you, but I struggle with the concept of Stalingrad as a setting for b...

Re: Gerardo Herrero's Frozen Silence film

Hi John

One of those Amazon 'if you bought this...' suggestions, occasionally they're useful. The opening scene I thought was quite stunning - sculptures? Er, no... (you'll see what I mean when you see it!)

Gerardo Herrero's Frozen Silence film

Has anyone else seen this? Possibly influenced by Night Of The Generals, it's centred around soldiers of the Spanish Blue Division, Leningrad front, 1943. Interesting film. Puzzled by the Deer Hunter style Russian roulette sequence, as I've never heard of this being a practice in that conflict parti...

Re: White Tiger, the film

That's some pretty wooden dialogue on that trailer, perhaps it works better in Russian with subtitles. Yeah, the Tiger's not quite there, is it? Still, could make for an entertaining couple of hours on the couch with a pizza.

Re: African German Soldiers?

Pretty sure I've seen a documentary on this subject, probably aired more than 10 years ago. People originating from Imperial Germany's limited colonial territories, safest option during NSDAP period to enlist... would love to see it again.

The habit of rank

Morning troopers... Occurred to me while glued to Yesterday Channel the other night, the blokes who pop up giving their reminiscences on those docs, if they're former officers, are still referred to as such, IE we get General so and so, Major so and so, although they're obviously long out the job. T...

Re: German movies on DVD

I'm on my second player (got about 6 years out of my first one), both of them cracked for all regions, though I think in both cases it was the nice man in the shop who take care of that with a sly wink... I think some discs are region free in any case.

Re: German movies on DVD

Hi Helmut

In my experience there is a 'crack' for most models of players to enable them to handle multi region - usually taken care of by the store I bought it from, in my case, but try googling the model and there's usually a code you punch in that fixes it.

White Tiger, the film

Noticed copies of this in Sainsbury's today - anyone seen? At first glance, appears to be Moby Dick with tanks?!
